A friend of mine wants a new rifle .
To use only for deer and hogs
Shots out to 400 are likely.
The rifle will be a Rem 700 SPS.
Itold him i would post the Question and see what we get!

stubblejumperPersonally,I prefer the 7mmremmag over the 270wsm and for deer and hogs the 300wsm certainly is not required.

2ndtimerFor just deer and hogs, I would opt for the .270WSM if he handloads. If he is not a handloader, then the 7mm Rem Mag would make more sense if he really anticipates 400 yard shots. IF he is more realistic and reduces his range to 300 to 350, I would say the standard .270 Winchester may make even more sense, if limited to factory loads. But being a handloader, the .270WSM would be my choice. In fact, it was. I love mine with the 140 gr Nosler Accubond at around 3100 fps. Deadly accurate and very flat shooting. And with less recoil than the other two..
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

ramrod340My vote is the 7mm Remmag. It will do everything he needs. If he loads great upside potential. I played with a 300WSM and I was not impressed with the velocity I could get.

Savage99Today I like the 270 WSM. I used 7mm RM's for years and they were good too but now I don't have to deal with the poor headspace of belted rounds and I would not buy another on purpose. I would suspect that the factory 270 WSM loads are hotter than the 7mm RM which has been downloaded these days for some reason.
The 300 WSM is going to kick more and do about the same on deer. Get the 270 WSM.

fredj338Ditto what 2ndtimer said, if he handloads, I would go .300wsm just because you can download to 06 levels & if you ever go after elk your set there too. Hard to beat the 7rm for just factory loads though, lots of choices.

phurley5I just started shooting the .270 WSM and is it ever sweet, just like my Hemi. On a more practical side, if he is stopping at Deer and Hogs, choose the .270 WSM, if he is going on to bigger and better game in the future, as most hunters do, on to the 7mm or .300.

I don't agree. The maximum load for the 270 Win in a 24" barrel in Nosler #5 is about 3000 fps and in the same manual a 24" tubed 270 WSM makes 3186 fps. My own 270 WSM Kimber will do 3175 instrumental over a calibrated Oehler 35P. That's 175 fps more and my Kimber Montana weighs a lot less than any 270 Win that I have.
The 270 WSM is indeed a hot new cartridge that fills a niche and it's selling very well. Now don't get all worked up as the old 270 Win is good too. It's just not as powerful thats all and its rifles are longer and therefore heavier.

I beg to differ, MC. Check any loading manual and you will see that the short mag beats the standard .270 by anywhere from 100 to 200 fps. It is pretty simple, if one cartridge has greater case capacity and both are loaded to identical pressure levels, in identical barrels with identical bullets, the larger case will push the bullet faster. Now is the difference earth shattering? No, but I never said it was, I just said if I wanted to stretch the range to maximum, I would take any edge I can get, and an extra 200 fps from the muzzle (3100 vs. 2900) is an edge.
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

I have a 270WSM but it doesnt fill any niche. They have had factory loaded 27 caliber with higher velocity than the standard 270 win for years, the 270 weatherby.

James_BI must ask, why the 270 WSM and not the 7mm WSM? Not for the reason of bullet diameter as it is a mere .007", but as for bullet selection and added versatility.
The .284 caliber offers a wide range of bullets up to 175grs, where as the .277 only offers bullets up to 150grs.

Can't deny that the 175 gr bullet is heavier and has a higher sectional density than any available .277 diameter bullet. My question is do you really think it would be required for deer and hogs? He never mentioned elk, moose or grizzly. And I also am pretty darn certain that the big 7 Rem Mag with top end 175 gr loads is going to kick a lot harder than the .270WSM with 150 gr top end loads.
And if the hogs we are hunting can't be handled by a .270 caliber 150 gr Nosler partition at over 3000 fps, I don't think I will feel any more secure with a mere .007 gain in diameter and 25 gr bullet weight. I will still stick with the .270WSM, just because I like belts on my pants, not my cases.

Jay GorskiIf I were to buy an SPS, I'd get the 7mm08, want a little more power, get the '06. Don't have no need for any magnum for deer and hogs, even out to 400yds. Besides, the 708 would be much more enjoyable to shoot. Jay
