The best thing to do with your Chrony when you take it out the very first time is shoot it, then get it fixed and don't worry about it any more.

Really, eventually you will send a happy little missile downrange but slightly askew, and you will be a member of the "I shot my chrono" club. "Resistance is futile - you will be assimilated".

I recommend not shooting toward your chronograph using the offhand position - you will hasten its demise.
