Ackley Improved UserI don't know what an "old Winslow" 30-06 is, but here's where I'd go with a strong bolt-action '06 with 165 gr. bullets and a 25" barrel. These are tapped/compressed loads with Sierra BTs. These are loaded to 65,000 PSI - thus, work up to them from 3 grs below, moving up at 0.5 gr increments, while watching carefully for pressure. Also, I wouldn't exceed the velocities posted for these slow-burning powders.
VihtN560/112.4% fill/67.5g/3117 fps
Re-22/115.2% fill/67.1g/3104 fps
MAGPRO/115.3% fill/70.4g/3102 fps
WXR/114.0% fill/67.4g/3102 fps
7828SSC/112.6% fill/66.6g/3082 fps

If I'm not mistaken, this load is a "classic" and it works: 57.5-58grs. H4350, 210M primer, Rem. brass(Federal and Win. will work, too. And I like the 165 Hornady Interlock or Interbond. Jay

DeltaHunterLapua brass
57 grs. H4350
Fed210M
165 gr. Hornady Interbond
That load works real good for me in my bone stock pre '64 Model 70.

<slancey>chazgreen,
I have an FN like your Winslow: M98 Mauser, 1-11" twist, 24" barrel.
Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip 168 gr.
Federal brass
Federal 210 primer
62.5 gr. RL 19
I get 2900+ fps with good accuracy.

captdavidMy FN likes both 4350s and 165 BTs and GKs, around the safe max loads in most books. I get 2750-2800fps. Funny thing it doesn't much like 168BSTs. Go figure, capt david

Idaho ShooterOne of my favorite 30-06 loads has been a 165 Nosler Balistic tip over 60.0 gr of H4831 and a CCI 250 primer. I usually loaded these in Lake City brass, but commercial brass works as well.
I have been shooting this combination since 1980, and have used it in over a half dozen rifles. The only one that did not shoot it well was my Mom's Rem 742 carbine.

buckshotI guarantee this will stop deer in their tracks if you do your part (or the first beer is on me)
1) 165 grain Nosler ballistic tip
2) 58.5 grains IMR 4350
3) F210M primer
4) LCNM or Federal case
This shoots well out of my FN and M70. It will break 2800FPS in the FN, but I haven't clocked it in the Winchester yet.

CG.....
I agree wholeheartedly with the other responses here on 165 grainers in the 06, you'll get great results with well-assembled loads using either 57-58 grains of H-4350 or 59-60 grains of H-4831 with most good brand bullets, Nosler BT or Partition, Sierra GameKings, HPBT or Spitzer and the Hornady Interlokt or SST. The CT Ballistic Silvertips in 168 grain also shoot right along in the same catagory (I'm not gonna argue over the three grains difference, either!).
As for the primer I normally start with the same brand of primer as the brass I'm using at the moment so I end up alot with Remington or Winchester primers in the same brand of brass. While some may take great offense to this I have never had a major accuracy hickup based on primers with loads that have been assembled with some decent amount of atention to detail like case length, AOL and basic solid branded name components. They all seem to shoot fairly well and I'm prety picky about the end result.
Have fun putting the loads together.

In my 30-06, with 165 grain bullets I get excellent results with either H4350 or H414, Winchester WLR (regular -- not magnum) primer. CCI 200 and Remington 9 1/2 (both regular, not magnum) primers work well too. I use Remington or Winchester brass -- whichever I have available; both seem to work equally well, but don't intermix them.
