.338 Win Mag 200 GR Load
I have a couple .338s in my safe that I haven't played with yet. Picked up some dies, 200 grain Speer hot cores, and fed 250 primers today. Lots of powder on hand. Anybody have any pet loads for this bullet?

I have a bunch of surplus H4831 I would love to burn up if anyone has a good load with that specific powder it would be appreciated.

4831 is on the slow side for 200 gr bullets in the 338.I have never seen a 338 that didn't like IMR 4350 with the 185 thru 210 gr bullets. With the 200 Speer bullets I would start about 67 or 68 grs of IMR 4350 and work up to a max of 71 to 72 grs. Check your Speer lpading manual. I'm sure you will find a load your rifle will like. Also a little confusion on your primers....... Federal makes a # 215 primer and CCI makes a # 250 primer. Hope that helps.

Correct. They are CCI...it was after midnight when I posted, lol.

Thanks for the advice. I have some 4350 on hand.

I've had pretty good luck with 74 gr Reloader 19 behind both the 200 grain Speer and the 200 grain Nosler BT in my rifle.

All the velocity I need and good accuracy.

19 is one I wish I had on hand. Would like to try it in a few other chamberings as well.

First, you are a genuinely lucky person or have great foresight to have a quantity of Surplus 4831 on hand, perhaps one of the finest powders ever manufactured.

Second, Surplus 4831 is NOT at all too slow for the .338 using 200 grain bullets. I have used a moderately compressed load of 77 grains under a Nosler 200 Ballistic Tip for 3050 fps from my 24-inch barrel. I more frequently use a load of 75 grains under either a 225 Nosler Partition or a 225 Nosler Accubond for 2910 fps. Oh yes, with a CCI 250 primer, and usually in Winchester brass.

These loads yield not only high velocities but also very even velocities, with standard deviation being in the single digits. I suspect that if you start with Surplus 4831 in your .338's you'll never look back.

By the way, since I'm running a bit low on Surplus 4831 (and current H4831 is nothing like it in terms of accuracy in my experience), I experimented with some slightly slower IMR7828 SSC in its place. The short cut 7828 will allow you to pack a little more into the case, and I found by increasing powder weight by about 3% over Surplus 4831 you get pretty close to the same performance.

Excellent info gentleman. In addition to the 4831 I have the 7828sc and 414 that were mentioned on hand.
