6.5-'06 info needed

Hi,
I'm sending off my '98 German mauser to get a new Douglas xx barrel put on it and was wandering a few things. It will be a medium weight deer rifle.

1. Does the 6.5-'06 really need a tube longer than 24"?

2. What twist rate do I need for shooting 120 to 129 gr. bullets in this caliber?

3. Does anyone have experience with IT&D Custom Guns in Minerva, Ohio? Good or bad? The price they quoted me seems really fair.

4. Favorite loads in 6.5-'06 for deer?

I am in the early stages of having a 6.5-06 improved built.The barrel length will be a total of 26",which includes the muzzle brake.Nosler has reloading info on the 6.5-06.

The 6.5-06 is a great cartridge. You don't need a barrel over 24" to get reasonable velocity. My 24" 6.5-06 averages 2930-2953 fps with 140 bullets. A 1 in 9 twist should work well for you. I would recommend trying the 140 grain bulets. These bullets are what really make the 6.5's shine and the 1-9 twist will work for these.

Nosler has reloading data for 6.5-06 as do afew others. I use RL22 almost exclusivley in all my 6.5's.

For any bullet weight from 140 down a 1-9 twist will work very well.

I shoot a 6.5-06AI and I load 58 grains of H4831SC for 125 partitions and 129 Hornadays. I am getting 3220 fps from a 25 inch barrel. For the 140 grain bullets I use 57 grains of H4831SC and get 3040 fps.

I built mine on a Shilen SS select match barrel and got a 1-8 twist because I shoot quite a few 160 grain bullets.

My 6.5-06 deer rifle is built on a Rem M700 action with a 23.5" Shilen barrel -- sporter contour. You won't need a longer barrel for this cartridge, and a 9" twist will stabilize the 120 to 129 grain bullets. My rifle will shoot the Sierra 160 gr RN bullets, but not the (old) Barnes 165 semi-spitzer. If you want to shoot heavy bullets get an 8" twist or 7.87".This Shilen barrel shoots excellent groups.

I have some 125 grain Nosler Partitions if you need some (I am shooting the 120 grain Swift now).

Do you have a "Registered Coon Ass" plate on your truck? <---humor

Thanks for all the info guys. Looks like I came to the right place to ask this question. I'm excited about this project. I will get it out UPS this week and hopefully within a month or two be shooting it.
