Anyone out there ever play with an 8mm Gibbs? Did it achieve much over a std 8mm-06 ? Anyone have a set of dies they would like to move ?

Don't have an 8 mm Gibbs, but the 338 Gibbs is - IMO - an extraordinary wildcat.

AIU What cases are you using ? If I go with an 8mm Gibbs I was planning on using 06 cases necked up to 35 cal then resized to 8mm with some resistance in the last bit of travel when closing the bolt. That would fireform nicely.

I've had the best luck using 280 Ackley Improved cases from Nosler - good brass and long enough.

What you propose would work too.

And, don't forget you can buy 35 Whelen brass, if you like.

I used 280 Norma brass for my Gibbs style wildcats going all the way up to 416 (yes had a few failures at 416)Have not tried the Nosler.

For an 8mm I sure would take a look at the Whelen brass. My 400PDK uses 06 cyclinder brass which wasn't formed. It has a 35 Whelen headstamp

Gibbs called the 150gr at 3346, the 170 at 3200 and 200 at 2913. Velocities from a 26". Had the article but it is on photobucket and haven't set it up on another site.

Thanks for the input guys. After a little more consideration I can't see there being much more there than there is in an 8mm-06 Ackley Imp (which I have). So I've decided to go with the 8mm Mazon which is the 9.3x64 necked down to 8mm.

If you have an AI stay with it. Starting from scratch opt for the extra capacity.
