20shadow056.5x55, 120 gr. NBT and Varget
Hi All,
Title describes what I am trying to do. Has anyone had any succes with 120 gr Nosler Ballistic tips and Varget in a modern 6.5x55? Hodgdon shows a max load of 39 grains and my new Nosler manual shows 41 grains max. Any real life experience with this combo would be great.
Thanks
Mark

vapodogI finally settled on H-4350 in my 6.5 X 55 but tried Varget among others.....I settled on H-4350 because I had a lot of it primarily!!
Yes Hodgdon shows 39 grains as max but please notice that they show the pressure they recorded at that charge to be 45,300 CUP.....and if you have a modern action you could stand a bit more. I'd bet the Nosler manual is a lot closer to reality for a modern action.....I'd not hesitate to work up to 41 grains in this case.
In my VZ-24 I'm shooting 2 1/2 grains over Hodgdon's data with absolutely no signs of pressure at all.

Reloader2H4350 has worked well for me with the 120 grain BT. I'm thinking it gives you a bit more volume than Varget. If you go with Varget, let us know what happens.

Bobby TomekI've shot 6.5x55s quite a bit over the years, and while both Varget and Re-15 will do OK with 120 grain BTs, H4350 will, as a general rule, do better. Then again, I prefer Re-22 even with the 120s as it gives a very high load density, excellent accuracy and very good velocity.
Another good prospect for the 120 is Re-19.

PeterMy best results with the 120 (SMK) was with IMR 3031. Best results for the 140 (SGK) so far, is with H1000. Bobby I would be interested in your RL22 loads as I have had no luck with that at all!

Bobby TomekPeter-
49 grains of Re-22 under a 120 grain Nosler BT gave well under MOA in 4 different 6.5x55s using Lapua brass and Fed 210s.
With the 140 grain GameKing, I am using 47 grains of Re-22. In an Encore barrel by Van Horn that I recently sold, it would consistently keep 3 shots inside of 1.5 inches -- at 300 yards, I might add.

Bobby Tomekacsteele-
47 grains Re-22 and the 140 grain Partition is a proven recipe in this household. Several others have tried it with very good results as well.
With the Partition, keep in mind that varying the seating depth a few thousandths backwards or forwards can significantly tighten groups.

ned48 grains of R22 under a 140 grain pill at 2800 fps has always been good for me. H4350 has won over R19 in my rilfes for the the 125 grain and 130 grain bullets. I am going to try H4831 next. For the 100 grainers IMR 4064 and Varget work well as does IMR 4350.
I just got a bunch of 120 grn NBT seconds so messing w/them should keep me off the streets for a couple of months.

40 grains of Varget and a 120 gr Nos BT has proven accurate in my Ruger, my Model 70 and my 1920 vintage Mauser Sniper rifle..

rflshtrI tried Varget, RE-19,H 4350 and IMR 4350 in my Rem 700 Classic Swede w/ Fed 210 primers and 120 grain ballistic tips and 125 grain partitions. Ballistic tips did not shoot very well with any of these in my gun( best was about 1.25") but with 45.0 gr of IMR 4350, the 125 gr Nosler Partitions shoot 5 shot groups repeatedly over several years to between 0.5" and 0.75" at 100 yards at a velocity of 2890 fps. These bullets are seated to a length of 3.15" OAL.

muckMy most accurate 6.5x55 load is with Sierra 120 grain matchkings over a modest amount of VihtaVuori N560.

20shadow05Thanks Everyone,
Tried a number of things with the 120 Noslers, including powders other than Varget, but the groups were not so hot. Had some 125 gr Partitions and used those with H4831sc and the groups are/were out of this world, so that is what I will use.
