30 Super H&H Original Loading
30 Super H&H Original Loading
What was the original Cordite load for the 30 Super, aka, the 300 H&H?
I saw that the 375 was 62 grains; couldn't find the 30.
I might want to load some with cordite. Might not.
I just want to know.

craigsterThis might get you in the ballpark:
https://revivaler.com/the-300-holland-holland-magnum/Where are you getting your Cordite these days ?
Thanks; that article is where I got the 62 grains for the 375; no mention of the Super 30 loads,
I figured I would just nitrate some spaghetti.
I need to know the original loading. Sometimes it is marked on the rifle barrel. Like CORDITE 62 MAX.
Found it in Cartridges of the World
49 220
55 180
58 150
I need it so I can engrave barrels.

Found the same numbers in Taylor's book, along with MV, ME, and pressures (18 1/2 tons all three). He also lists info on a flanged version operating at 17 1/2 tons.
Good; thanks; forgot to look there; I have that book.

They are the cordite loads for the Super 30 Magnum Flanged (300 H&H Rimmed)
The following as published in the ICI catalogue for Super 30 Magnum Rimless (300 H&H Belted) are
150 58
180 55
220 49
That matches cartridges of the world. I'll use those.

NormanConquestI was going to recommend COTW + Taylor's book but ya'll beat me to the punch. At least you have your info + hopefully in a couple of days your brass.
Never mistake motion for action.

I have done what might be called "semi reloaded" with cordite.
Back in the 60s n Australia the 303/25 and 303/270 were popular, especially the 303/25. Both local factory rounds
For the 303/270 we would just pull the 174 grain bullet from the Mark VII 303 military ammo, neck down and seat a 100 grain bullet.
The .30 Super and the .300 H&H Magnum are not the same cartridge but they are VERY similar. The .30 Super came first, has a slightly different case shape than the .300 H&H Magnum and was loaded to a lower velocity. Oddly enough, Wikipedia has a good description. My own rifle is a early .30 Super Rimmed and so marked and thought to be he only single shot H&H built in that caliber(so what?). Wonderful deer cartridge.

Interesting write up on Wiki, but I see variations well within the usual tolerance specs for cartridge cases. Doesn't matter though.
By now it is just a name.
Will your SS take a FL sized 300 case?
Indeed it will. I generally just neck size though to prolong brass life.
Steve
Good to know; now I am assuming that whoever wrote that article just measured some brass and came up with the usual variations among makers, and even years.
Rather than the proven fact that they are/were two different cartridges.
CIP specs are different for the two. The print was slightly modified at the time of the name change.
