Nosler- ballistic tip vs ballistic silvertips
Wondering what is the difference between Nosler ballistic tips and ballistic silvertips, (other than the latter has Lubalox coating)? Dissected images of the two look very much alike. I have worked up accurate ballistic tip load for .270 Win., but have yet to kill anything with it. However, what I read here on AR is that perhaps it is too frangible a bullet, unless you carefully pick your shots, avoiding bone.

I have used both in my 270win.The BT is softer or more fragile. You should have no problem out of a 270.Both will perform perfectly on deer or caribou. However,a silvertip or another flat base bullet will work better.

shootaway: Are you thinking of the old Winchester Silvertip, the one with the aluminum allow tip, or the CT Ballistic Silvertip, which I understand to be the same as the Ballistic Tip except with the Lubalox coating? The Ballistic Silvertip is a Boat Tail design, like the Ballistic Silversip, not a flat base design like the original Silvertip.

I tried all three. The Nosler ballistic tip,Combined technologies ballistic silvertip and the Winchester silvertip.I prefer the flat base Win silvertip.

It's my understanding that they are one and the same except for the proprietary coating & higher price.

First of all the old silvertip does not have an alluminum tip....is is lead covered with thin alluminum shim...pinch one with pliers and you will see.

Second the Nosler Bal. tips and the CT are one and the same exact bullet.

Thanks guys for your input. You confirmed my suspicions about bal. tips and the bal. silvertips being the same bullet, with slight difference. I am going to try some other options like Horn. Interlocks & SST's, maybe Nos. Part's or Swift Sciroccos. I usually start with Horn. for several reasons: good bullets, competitive price, & usually work well for me. As for the old Win. Silvertip of years ago; they were a great bullet for me. I found them deadly on deer, at all ranges(30-400 yds), out of my .308 Win. If still available I would still be using them.
