Myth Busters on TV..

Terry BlauwkampMyth Busters on TV..
This weekend the Myth Busters were trying to shoot an Ice and Meat bullet out of a 6.5 Carcano rifle, like Oswald (is said to have used).
The TV folks need to get their facts straight.
First they said the Bullet was traveling a 3 times the speed of sound. Well, sound is about 1122+ fps, and twice the speed would be a big deal from a Carcano. ( Hornady quotes a 100 gr bullet at 2600 as a top speed).
Also they said the bullet "continues to accelerate" after it leaves the barrel. False, it starts to slow the instant it leaves the barrel.
They sure could have used some help from an expert reloader, as the show was full of flaws.
Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

MThuntrTerry that is true that they should have researched the subject better, but you should realize that the average schmuck in the US (the world for that matter) doesn't have a freakin clue they're wrong. It is disappointing that they don't take a few minutes and teach their interns how things work especially with all of the gun myths out there.
It is purely for entertainment value so I suggest you focus on the Hot Redhead, Carrie

NEJackThe ice bullet myth was one they did in their first couple of seasons. After all the email they got, the writers improved how the show handles fire arm related myths.
The last one I saw was what will blow a door lock off.

TitanDid you see the episode where they fired, at a shallow angle, various calibres up 50BMG into a swimming pool?
I thought that numerous golden rules were being broken.....but they got away with no damage to life or limb.

Saw that one, and laughed about it a bit. In my younger and much dumber days, we did similar things with a SKS trying to shoot bottles floating in a creek. Not a good idea. I often wonder how many goofballs out there see Mythbusters and then go try to do the stunts. Like firing a M-1 Garand underwater.

CDHYeah, guys relying on plexiglass panels for protection don't seem to show a lot of respect or understanding about what they are dealing with. One of them (the bald guy) is supposedly ex-military or something? He at least seems able to shoot straight, as during one episode when they shot a car gas tank (part full) to see if it would explode, he had a 2" group or so...from an open sight military style 7.62 rifle.
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

TCLouisSent a friend (PhD, Mechanical Engineer) the picture of the rifle floating aroun=d the net of the rifle AFTER one shot with laser in the barrel.
He explained it could not be done because myth busters had not been able to peel barrel back when the shot ONE time on camera to test the banana peel barrel look.
Anyone know what a graph looks like with one data point.
Though they may do some things well, I think their lack of knowledge/ability/time/money makes many things they "PROVE" to be suspect.
Just an opinion of course and we all KNOW about opinions . . . don't we?

CheechakoOpinions? Nope, I don't have one.

I enjoy MYTHBUSTERS for what it is. Television entertainment.

skb2706Shooting the scuba oxygen tank ...ala the movie "Jaws" to get an explosion was a catchy one. They could not get it to blow up no matter how they shot it.

I just knew there was something special about those Italian rifles. I wonder if we can find out how they got their bullets to continue accelerating after the force on the bullet base has been discontinued. I'd like to incorporate that feature into some of our more modern rounds.....
