I noted the interest in the 30-338, i have given it some consideration as a rechamber for a Ruger #1 with 26 inch barrel. Questions, why would anyone choose the 30-338 over the 300 Win? 300 Win has a little more case capacity, little more velocity and energy,probably a litttle more recoil, but I doubt much, and most important, when one forgets his cutome loaded bullets he can generally find 300 Win at some local back woods drug/sporting good store... The only draw back to the 300 Win that I can figure is the short neck. Am Ioverlooking something from the practical standpoint????

Steven.....ypu've got it right. Variations in individual barrels etc will proobably be more than the difference between the .300 WinMag and the .30/338 and the idea that the neck is too short on the WinMag is funny..some gun-rag writer put it in an aricle and everyone seems to jump on the bandwagon.....one-caliber length necks isn't a bad idea, it just isn't written in stone...especially if you know how to adjust neck-tension on your reloads.

When I did my first 30-338 (Ruger #1) I compared it to a 300 Wby about 10 grs of powder less and within 100 fps velocity. I still own the 300 wby. Now my second 30-338 is on a Rem 700 and I get alittle better velocity than the #1. I just send my custom 300 Win Mag out to be rebarreled to a 300wsm. I've never had much luck with the 300 win mag and I've had afew in the last 40 yrs. I'm in my 60's and to be honest I've never forgotten my ammo, forgot my deer tag once. If your real worried about forgetting your ammo I would go with a factory round. Good luck!

I have a .30/.338 and love it! But, the common complaint about the .300 Win Mag is the short neck and the need to seat heavy bullets deep in the case to meet OAL requirements imposed by magazine length. Unless your #1 is very short throated, you should be able to load "long" and overcome the OAL problem.I have a #1 in .300 Weatherby mag and can load bullets so long, they are almost falling out of the case!
