300 Weatherby for Long Range Target shooting
I am starting to put together a rifle (on a Remington 700 action) for long range target shooting: 300 to 600 yards.

This won't be formal (competative) shooting; just bragging rights among friends.
The rifle WON'T have to serve any other purpose (i.e. I won't be using it for hunting).

I am leaning towards the 300 Weatherby, since I already handload for my father's rifle in this caliber (and have both the dies and experience).

Most of the people I will be shooting with use the 300 Winchester Magnum.

I like the 300 Weatherby for it's larger case volume for 220 and 250 grain bullets.

Anyone have any target experience with the Weatherby at longer ranges?

Thanks,

Garrett

If 30 caliber is your choice, you need not go to the Magnums, the .308 Winchester and the great and old .30-06 will do just fine for 600 yard "matches".

Another vote for the 308. I love the 300 WBY, but for target shooting, I recommend the 308.

Garrett, my take appears to be a little different from the other guys. I say go for it with the magnum, especially if you're looking for bragging rights and something to impress your friends. However, if it were me, I'd pick the 340 or 338 RUM. With bullet weights all the way up to 300 grains 338's are hard to beat, but just as you mentioned if you're already set up to load the 300, it might just be better to stick with that. I know the 308 and '06 will do the job, but they don't have the bad A$$ factor that the 300 Wby, 340 Wby have if you know what I mean. I don't have much personal experience with the 300 or 340 Weatherby, but I have lots of time in with the 338/378 which is what I do all of my long range work with and let me tell you it will kick some serious a$$.
