Extended Shell Holders
What is the purpose of EXTENDED shell holders? Normally, the die is adjusted until the regular shell holder just touches. How can an extended S H push the case any further into the die? If it has a thinner lip, why not just mill a few thousandths off a regular S H?

Captain Nemo,
In a standard press, short cases will not be placed high enough to protrude out the top of the press for file trimming.

Ross, does that mean that the shell holder protrudes INTO the frame? the_captn

Hey Capt.,

I have a die set for .223 Remington that is supposed to be "Deluxe" because it has a micrometer adjusted bullet seating die. Instead of putting the bullet in the case mouth and running the case and bullet up into the seating die, there is an extended shell holder that elevates the case another 1.5 inches or so higher into an overly tall seating die. The seating die has the side cut out so you can put the bullet in the die from the side as you raise the case in the die. The whole thing is stupid to me, and I wish I had bought a regular die set instead.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Basically they are for little cases in big presses.

Hi Dave

Would that be a RCBS comp.die you are talking about?
If it is just send it to me.I have all the shell holder extensions.
I will put it to good use.
