Rem. 308 PSS question
I have a new PSS that had some smith work done on before I received it. Supposedly the barrel was set back some.
I have'nt been able to shoot is yet. I'm still waiting on rings & base.
I pushed a Sierra 168 BTHP bullet in the chamber and it measured 2.890. I've heard that Remingtons have long throats, but that still seems long to me when the bullet length is 2.775. What does your PSS measure? Should I be concerned with 2.890? Any comments would be great. Thanks

The oal Sierra has for that bullet is 2.800". The barrel couldn't have been set back too far, my S/S barrel on my Rem. gets the lands at 2.945" with the 168MK. I'm thinking thats the oal for that bullet with pretty much all 308 Remington throats, at least from what I've read on other threads.
Seat the bullet at 2.830 so it'll fit in your magazine, and go shoot it, that rifle is capable 1/2' groups all day long, some may go under 1/4"

Just wondering what powder you're using? I'd go with RE15 or Varget, won't do much better than that. IMO. Jay

All of the New Rem rifles have terribly long throats. I have the LA Police and had no problems reaching the lands w/ 190+200 MKs but 180s were barely in the case. Luckily the Mag box is so long it allows for the long OALs. The bad thing about the SA is you can't get anywhere close to the lands and still fit them in the box. They'll still shoot great though, I've seen several rifles that shot one holers despite the bullets seated way off of the lands. I have a Sendero in 300SAUM that I can reach the Lands w/ some Match bullets but not others. I can't get very close w/ the NBTs either but it'll still shoot 1/2" groups w/ them.

Sounds like someone was trying to take out some of this problem by having a smith bring the bbl back alittle.

I talked to a guy out at the range not long back that had a 700 308 and he said he could'nt even reach the lands w/ alot of bullets, said they wouldn't be in the case hardly any.

Good Luck!

Pretty much the same story w/ my 700 5-R. Tried to make the lands, but it wasn't going to happen.

I've been seating the 168MK to 2.81" over IMR4895, w/ pretty good results. Pretty good unless I choke (example attached), of course. Recently loaded up a couple of test batches for comparison, seated to 2.83" & 2.85" OAL respectivly.

If the wind stays down, I hope to give 'em a try tomorrow.

Assuming most Rem 308's have the same max OAL for loading in the mag - can you provide that info?

Hey Bonesarelli, Are you using the MatchKings just to Benchmark the rifle's accuracy?

Are you planning to hunt with the rifle or just shoot Targets?
---

Each rifle measures differently for the Seating Depth, so what the length to the Lands is in someone elses rifle won't do you a lot of good.

No, don't be concerned at all about the 2.890". The vast majority of actual Hunting bullets aren't as sleek as the MatchKings and have a good chance of Kissing-the-Lands and still fit within the magazine. And having the bullet jump a bit to reach the Lands does not necessarily mean it will hurt the accuracy.
