.300 Win Mag load

Today I tested a new load, consisting of 81.0 grains of R22, WLRM, Win cases, 3.400" OAL, Win cases and Barnes 180gr XLC flat base. Velocity aerage was 3230 fps. Ruger KM77RSP with a 24" barrel.

My question is. Does anyone out there tested something similar ? if so, with what results ??

That's a hot load.

My favorite load for the .300 Win Mg is 180 gr Nosler partitions, 76-77 gr RL22, Win mag primers, Federal brass, 3.339 COL. Velocity is 3030 fps. This a max load in my rifle - 1908 Brazilian DMW Mauser, with a 24" barrel(rechambered from .30-06)

I have never ever gone that far in any of the 300 winchester magnums I have owned.
Always stopped at the 76.5-78.0 grain level which translated in 3,000 to 3,125 fps.
No matter wether you see high pressure "signs" or not, your load may very well be way too hot.
Shoot safely, and if its that the sort of velocity you are looking for, maybe you would consider moving up to a Weatherby, Dakota or RUM in a 26 inch barrel.

Gustavo, I have to agree with the other guys that this may be a pretty darned hot load.

The only reason it may be acceptable is the use of the Barnes XLC coated bullets. I am sure they lower the friction and pressure down the bore.

If it seems fine in your gun and the primer pockets stay tight after a few firings, go for it.
But, the hottest load listed in the latest Barnes Reloading Manual for R22 behind the 180 grain XLC bullet in the 300 Win Mag is 80 grains for a velocity of 3146 fps.

My old standby load for the .300 Win is 78 grains of RL-22 and a Fed 210 primer, 3100 fps with a Nosler Partition. I can go faster with the XLC bullet but I lose that one hole accuracy. Good shootig. [Wink]

Very impressive speeds from a 24" 300 Win.That's 4 grs. over the max load according to Hodgdon.Do you have any pressure signs? Never been able to get mine much past 3100, but I've never tried Rel 22 either.

That's not a hot load, that's a WIDOW MAKER. It's a matter of time before something blows. It will.

I load Barnes X 180 in front of 73.5 of R-22. That's clocks at a steady 3050 and groups less that 3/4. I've reloaded for the 300 Win for something like 30 years. I wouod not want to be anywhere close to you when you fire that concoction. It's like drinking and driving; you can get away with it more times than not, but sooner or later you'll get arrested, if you're lucky. If not, you'll hurt somebody; maybe yourself.

Cut back the powder. Shooting isn't a speed race, it's an accuracy contest. Getting hurt spoils everything.

81 gr of Rel 25 is plenty hot, that load of Rel 22 is going to kill you.

I've used the 178 gr AMAX at 3000 and 3100 fps using VV N-160 powder in my HS Precision HTR .300 WinMag.
Currently I'm using the 190 gr Sierra MK @ 2925 fps. using 68.5 gr VV N-160
Around Febr. I shot the Sierra 220 gr MK @ 3000 fps using Norma MRP. This the most accurate load I've fired yet, but case life was poor so I havn't shot it much.

I also know that not having "apparent signs" of pressure, means almost nothing...the beast is there, no doubt in my mind.

The question was targeted as to try the combo if coated bullets and R22.

QuickLoad was pretty right on the prediction, estimating pressure around 74000 PSI.

Accuracy report :

Today I tested this load for accuracy. I fired 4 shots at 150 meters ( 164 yds ) 2 bullets in one hole, and group size, 1.6 inches. Agains, 0 pressure symptoms. Very normal extraction.

I must say that's pushing it.
I have loaded with rl 22 for my 300 and i get good results with it.My best load is 75gn rl22
fed 215 primer 165 gn horandy btsp=3150fps
.325 group.I have loaded 79gn for the same bullet
and get 3300 fps and no signs of presure,but
it only groups 1 1/2.
