.308 150 grain 1800 fps@100 metres.
That is the ultimate performance requirement for my purpose.
1800fps velocity at target range apparantly utilises best standard bullet performance.
Powders available to hand; varget, H414,H4350,IMR4350.
Loads please Remington ADL/ Speer spitzer.

Geesh...almost any .308 load with a 150 grain bullet will be doing better than 1800 fps at 110 yards...considering that they start out at around 2800 to 2900 fps at the muzzle.

At 200 yards, your bullet will be travelling so slow many brands will fail to expand.

45 grains of H4350 would give you about 2200 fps at the muzzle...

Are you basically wanting to reduce the recoil and still have an effective load?

That's a nice velocity for 100 and can be done with cast bullets too. The powders you have are too slow to really work well at the low pressures they will produce at 2000 to 1800 fps.

The Speer manual has loads that give the exact velocity you want. They suggest from 18 to 23 grs of SR 4759 that tops out at 1988 fps.

If you do get a can of 4759 consider some magnum primers and some kapox for a filler. Kapox is used in lifejackets.

Good luck.

I want a reduced recoil and a more efficient load.
I want to use the standard 150 g. bullet to best potential effect. i.e. keep the impact velocity low enough to minimise bullet breaking apart, yet still get full expansion.
I read that 1800fps is the ultimate impact speed for a run of mill jacketed soft point. Given that 90% of my deer are taken between 70 and 130 metres standard velocity is inefficient and unnecessary at this range.
What would be problems/disadvantages with using 45g. of H4350 as suggested?

I don't understand how using more gunpowder makes a cartridge "more efficient" unless you like supporting the powder company! But--I would recomend using the book minimum of faster powders like 4895 etc. I would recomend loading in groups of 5 with different powders and see if you hit the "sweetspot" with barrel harmonics.
Just my opinion -- your mileage may vary!

Trans pond,
I would recommend using a faster powder than H4350. The recommendation that I would give is H4895. It has given excellent (target) accuracy in loads as low as 60% of maximum. I would start at about 30 grains and find the load that gives you the velocity that you want. The maximum listed load in my book is 44 grains so you could go as low as 27 grains according to Hodgdon.

You might want to recall that the bullet rotational speed will be lower with these lighter loads.

Few spitzer bullets will expand much at 1800 fps. If you insist on that impact velocity, then I suggest you use the company's Mag-Tip bullet. Or the Nosler Ballistic Tip.
It is recommended that one use powders no slower than 4895 for reduced loads. So Varget would be the one. You should be able to use as little as 2/3's the normal charge with Varget to achieve your required velocity. I'v had excellent luck with magnum primers and light charges of IMR 3031 in my .280 Remington. E

What are you shooting or shooting at? Now I read that it's expansion thats needed.

The 30/30 bullets were made for that velocity and range if the game is just deer size?

What is the reason for such a light load?
