.44 Mag: velocities from rifle?
Gentlemen,

what velocities can I expect from a 22 inches rifle barrel in .44 Mag? Bullet weights 240 or 300 Gr.
And if I handload, what are the limits for a Winchester M94?
What are your hunting experiences with that caliber?

With the 240 you should get around 1900 to 2000 the 94 isn't a really strong action so standard 44 loads should be used. They well be up around 40000 psi a 3030 isn't much more.

The slower the powder, the faster the velocity in longer barrels (most of the time)
Hope this helps. Dan

I have a Marlin 1894 lever action that consistantly shoots 1 1/4moa with the 240gr. It likes speeds from 1750 to 1800 and some of the tables I've seen have them going as fast as 1900 but my gun does notseem to shoot well above 1825fps. I tested some remington bullets against some hornady XTP shooting into a dirt pile at 100 yards this weekend. The remingtons hardly expanded at all and almost acted like a solid compared to the traditional mushroom of the hornady. Take note if you are hunting large quarry (BEAR) and use the remington for the penatration. WIN296 is a good powder for this cartridge. Crimp them well!
