4895 in my 45-70s
Looking for data to give me 1300-1500 fps with Lee 340 or RCBS 325 GC bullets in a 14 and 24 inch barrel.
No, don't need rompem stompem loads I have things to do that, just want to plink and play out to 100 yards and kill a deer at 50 yards and I gots a lot of 4895 and want to do it different than the 3031 I have been using!

Nothing I have lists 4895 loads in the trapdoor load range.

Try 44 grains of 4895 with the 340-350 grain bullets for a MV of around 1400 FPS. I have found that at these low pressures, there's going to be some incompletely burned powder grains left in your bore! [Big Grin]

That shouldn't bother him much if he is used to 3031 as it is a bit dirty also.

I have seen in print 46 gr 4895 for 405 gr as a Trapdoor load.
I tried 40 gr in my Handi rifle and it kicked so hard, I only fired that one shot for a year.

Now I have learned that 30 gr kicks about as hard as a 30-06.

I recently did some tests with Unique powder and 405 gr hard cast, to see how much pressure the rifle could take. I got all the way to 88kpsi Quickload estimate before the brass gave out. I did not have my shoulder involved in those tests.

i asked quick load about this. I don't think there is a way to bring cast loads into the equation so I put in a 350 hornady.

with the 44 grain load it predicts 19k psi and 1519fps out of a 20" barrel. This load should give about 80% case fill.

Don't know if this helps or not. good luck.

I seems to me 4895 is a little slower than 3031 and usually I have to use a couple of grains more of it to get equal velocity. I find it hard to believe 40 grains of 4895 in a 45-70 provided anyone but an elf with excessive recoil.
