243 load
I need a load for a 70gr Sierra HPBT. I used to load 39 gr 3031. Never had a problem. Win. mod.70 pre 64 22" barrel. My load books are from the Jurrasic Age. 1 says ok the other says over load. I need a load using IMR 3031 or IMR 4350. I have a couple lbs of each. I have Fed 210 primers. Thank you Dave

With that weight of bullet in a .243 your answer is something your not looking for Varget 36.7 to 41.1 Max. It will net you much better MV and accuracy is my guess.
In a 26" barrel I get 3550 fps with this load and .5 MOA accuracy.

wave 45 to 47 gr. 4350 has worked for me. Top load velocity was around 3475 fps. beerroger

IMR 4350 is an excellent powder for a 70 grain bullet in .243 and is in a much more appropriate burning range than IMR 3031.

Bartche is right on the money on amount and velocity, depending, of course, on the vagueries of your particular rifle.

IMR 4350, make sure you load to near max velocity as light loads/bullets sometimes do not expand the case necks fully.

4350 will work better than 3031, I like H414 as well in the .243.

jstevens I agree that H414 is really a screamer with the lighter bullets along with W760. The load I really like is documented in Lyman 's 45 edition 48.0 gr. of W760 with a 70 gr. bullet for near 3700 fps.

The man asked because he has this powder, not for advice, right?

Speer #12 don't list 3031, not one of their favorites.

Lyman 47th: 35.0@ 3281fps, 39.5@3482=52,000psi as max.

How's that??

Go buy a couple new books pard. Sure helps with these new powders. I ran into that same problem with 30/30s some yrs ago after loading 300 up with older powder. Pulled them all down, then got a couple new books and turned out I was plumb safe because I had used the older powder too. New powder was much less wt. Sure had me thinking way overloaded. Something I don't want to do in a levergun.

From the Sierra reloading manual.

Best accuracy at 3100fps.

Suggested powder- H322 @ 33.8 gr.

IMR-3031 @ 34.8 = 3100fps

IMR-4350 @ 42.6 = 3100fps

Hope this helps.
