CappyAccurate 8700 powder?
I fella I know who got out of reloading had a new 1lb can of AA8700 sitting around so he gave it to me. I figured since its' burn rate was between Magpro and Retumbo (which works well in my 270WSM)it should work well for me. Unfortunately there seems to be almost no information out there for this powder at all. Can only find a reduced load in 6.5x55 and full loads for the real large mags like .300 Rem Ultra etc. Anybody know if this powder is usable in the WSM family?

CappyI took a look at your site, but nothing in the WSM family. Any idea if it is suitable for them? Both Magpro and Retumbo work well in the WSM's and AA8700 is right between those powders for burn rate, but I can't find any info.

fredj338It's certainly suitable. I have tried it in my 7mm Dakota, accuracy is very good but it's even too slow for that big 7mm w/ anything but 175gr bullets. You can load max. .270 data & work up or work from the .270wsm/RL25 data & work up.

StonecreekAlthough the *approximate* burn rate chart posted above shows AA-8700 with two powders in between it and H-870, it is my understanding that 8700 is the same "spec" powder as the old H-870. Simply using starting loads for H-870 and working from there is likely the best way to approach AA8700.
AA8700 is likley unsuitable for any of the WSM family with the possible exception of .270 or 7mm WSM using a very heavy-for-caliber bullet. Even then, the cartridge would need to be built on a standard length action in order to seat the extra long bullet far enough out to allow adequate powder room for such a slow powder.

nelsonted1Works great with cast loads in .308, 30-06, 8mm. I use it and 860 in steel plate matches with jacketed bullets. Very slow but extremely reduced recoil speeding recovery for the next shot and outstanding accuracy.
