A couple 308 loads

RMillerA couple 308 loads
Here are two loads I have done for my 308 Winchester with 2000MR powder.
first is with the 165 Sierra BT at 48.5 grains which is not book max btw. It does 2800 fps in my Howa. Shots 1,2,3 were brand new reloads and the remaining four were actually the bent and flattened tips from being in the magazine well while hunting. All together 1.5" minus one on the far upper right makes its 1.1".

RMillerThese are the Sierra 165 HP Gameking. Both with 2000-MR but Remington cases and CCI 200 primers.

hivelosityall those will kill any thing you shoot. I always like the 165sierra.
I load my 308 down a little. I get about 2675 to 2700 douglas barrel

RMillerI never tried the Hollow point Gameking before. They are supposed to be a little stouter than the SBT.

AtkinsonMy favorite powder in the .308 is Varget, has been for quite some time now..best accuracy and fastest velocity so far...
For hunting I like the 150 and 180 gre. WW power point and the round nose corelokt for deer... For elk I always go with the 165 or 180 gr. Nosler partitions..lots of options for the .308 and most work. but these bullets work from 1400 to 3100 FPS, that's the best I can find from my testing. Most bullets quit expanding at 1900 to 2000 FPS.

RMillerVarget with the 165 did 45gr-2676 fps, 45.5gr-2710, 2715 and 46gr-2710, 2706.
Varget with a 150 TTSX 45gr-2744, 45.5-2748, 46gr-2738.
This was the only powder I tried that had wierd velocities.
I see in my notes Varget at 44gr was 2664 with a 180. It doesnt say which 180.
Varget may be better with the 180.

RMillerI am going to shoot these for groups and see how they do.
All with the 165 Sierra.
BLC-2 47gr-2747, 2745
4064 45gr-2800
CFE 223 still have to test this powder.
I might throw in Varget at 45.5 just to see.

richjThanks for the info. It's always good to have alternatives. I'm in the middle of trying Varget and RL15 with 168 and 155.
I've been using AR-Comp with 168hpbt. 40gr.
I've had very good results with BLC2 in the cold, not so good in the heat.

hivelosityI never tried any Varget. imr 4064 168gr at about 2725 gave me 3/4" groups. one of my best loads came with H=380 loaded to about 2675 f/s.. 165gr sierra hpbt 3 shot were 1/4" 5 shot was about 1/2 and a little under

K22My favorite eastern white tail 308 load is 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunters with either IMR 4064 or Varget and Federal 210 match primers.
For Black Bear I prefer the 165 gain Nosler Partition - a great bullet for bear; same powders as above.
Shot a ton of white tail with this combo. A behind the shoulder shot drops them where they stand.

RMillerReady for the shoot off. I almost have the most fun just loading them.

RMillerMy son shot his first couple deer with the 150 Pro hunters out of his 30-06. Both bullets exited.

good shooting RMiller
what did you use before the 2000MR.?
I have loaded a lot of RL-15 and 4064
23 February 2017, 23:37
RMillerI think I used IMR4064. I first tried 2000MR because it was the only powder on the shelf at the time.

HogbreathThe most accurate load I found was the max load of RL15, recollection says it's 44.8 grains and a Hornady 168 gr Amax. Makes one hole groups less than 1/2".

AtkinsonIve had good luck with RL-15 in my .308 Savage mod. 99EG..44 grs is max in the savage, 46 is too hot in the 99 action.
Actually there are so many powders and bullet combinations that work in the .308 that it uncanny...Its simply and accurate caliber, and a good killer as well..I like the .308 win. If it weren't for nostalgia, Id rebarrel my 7x57, but ain't gonna happen.

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

RMillerGreat groups.
One of my requirements for my 308 is that I use hunting bullets. All this shooting is for hunting purposes.
One frustrating thing here is that the wind always blows. When I shot those seven shot groups on the last target I posted the wind was blowing pretty good.I wanted to go shooting today but the winds are gusting 35+mph. Even then some of my other groups have been shot in that winds. Just pull the trigger when you feel a pause in the wind.

ledvmWhile I shoot mostly R-15 in my .308s today another good and often overlooked powder and one I keep a lot of for other guns...is AA2230. I shoot 42 gr of AA2230 under a 168 TTSX or 43 gr of R-15. Both loads are super accurate for me.

GunsmokerI still use BLC2 for most of my 308 hunting loads, the only real snivel is it's bright muzzle flash when hog hunting at night. Working on some low flash loads with IMR 4198.
