cgdavid45-70 BP-Level Loads
I'm interested in what velocities 45-70 black powder loads produce with 300, 405 and, 500gr cast bullets. I'm interested in loading some of my more traditional guns to traditional levels with smokless. Any load suggestions welcome too.
Thanks...

The Dane300 grain @ 1400 fps
400 grain @ 1200 fps
500 grain @ 1100 fps
Your milage may wary, but it's in that ballpark. Remember to use a powder so slow that you have to fill the case more than half of the volume. Else you'll get irratic ignition and big SD's.

muffinI've only shot one bullet weight in my Marlin Cowboy Gun, a 510 grain, swaged Paper-Patched bullet, on top of 33 grains of Reloader 7, and a Federal GM-210 primer. Velocity is in the 1400fps range and accuracy is 1 MOA. Recoil is firm, but much nicer than when they were coming out at around 1600fps. Don't know what rifle you plan to use but the Cowboy Gun has a 26 inch bbl, shorter bbls will deliver less velocity of course.

Paper patched bullets are on my agenda of things to try. Where do you get your swaged bullets? I'm going to use them in a Browning(winchester with a 26"+ barrel) 1886, a Browning (winchester with a 22" barrel) 1886 saddle ring carbine a HR buffalo classic and, a couple Marlin 1895's
Thanks Gentlemen
