223 Powder

I just bought a Savage 112 varmint rifle. I load for a bunch of other rounds and I'ed like to keep my powder inventory to 3-4 kinds. I have Varget, H4350,and H4831SC in 8lb kegs on hand, plus a bunch of 1lb cans for small volume jobs. Is there a suitable loading using the powders I have for a 55gr.VMAX?? My manuals don't show any. I will buy another keg if I have to. I'll shoot several thousand rounds per year.

Their all a bit slow, but Varget is fairly good.
55gr.(* Max.) Varget 27.5 (Compressed) 3384fps & 49,700 Cup. (from Hodgdon Manual 2004)

I would suggest you get some WCC846 or 2230-C. Do it soon it won't last long and they really work great in my 12bvss-s .223.

2230-C Data Powder for $68 per 8-pound keg. Such a deal-- even with the $20 hazmat screwing added to it!!

2230-c is all I use in my AR-15, cheap accurate and farily clean. What more can you ask from $68 for 8 lbs!

I've used more H-335 with .223s and .223-based wildcats than all other powders combined. It always seems to produce a terrific blend of velocity and accuracy.

Head Trauma

Varget will work ok but H335 is da bomb for the 223. It's the only powder I use for my Savage 112 prairie dog loads.Easy to find, meters great, Death Ray accurate, have killed beacoup prairie dogs with it.

My model 12FV loves AA2460. It is a bit slower than AA2230, but I am not sure what its burn rate is in relation to AA2230-C.

I have found IMR 4198 to be a great chioce for the 223, but in all fairness, I have never tried the 55 gr pill. The IMR reloading manual lists loadings for all of their applicable powders, and I keep it handy for when Hornady or Sierra don't list the powder I want to try.

I like IMR4895 for long range accuracy and H335 for high velocity.

But I have shot more with 13 gr of Blue Dot at ground squirels. The barrel never gets hot or fouls. This download make the rifle act like a 218 Bee.

H-335, which is WC-844 spec powder, is one of the best for .223. I also like either of the 4895's. But in truth, 3031, 4895, 4064, 4320, BL-C2, VV 133, VV-135, RL-10, RL-15, AA-223, and about a dozen other powders will work just fine in a .223 with 55 grain bullets.

I have an accurate advertisment taped[so I wouldn't forget] to the side of the jug of 2230-c which states :"Accurate 2230-c data powder equivalent to 2460[use only accurate's publishished data]"
It does well in my 12bvss 223rem but not as good as H-335

A friend uses nothing but IMR 40464 in both his .223 and 22/250 for all bullets. It works well for him and he only has one can sitting around.

No one mentioned Winchester 748. I have been using it for years in my Savage 110 223. 27 grns behind a V-max 55. at 2.25 OAL.

Not that this applies to 223, but I did try some new Reloader 10x the other day in my 22-250 with great results. It is probably just marketing, but it does say it's specialy forumlated for .223 and 22-250.

AA 2230C is listed as developed for use in .223(5.56) and .308.(7.62)
Works for me in .221 Fireball, .223, 22- 250, 308, 30.06, and a few others I havn't got too yet. Burns real clean and meters well, besides being dirt cheep! It's the only powder I use in my rifle reloading. Got some Lil Gun for my .221 Fireball but am not too impressed so far. AA2230C works for me!
