Sabretooth4064 Powder
I've come across 8lbs of XMR 4064 powder, extruded by accurate. I have NO idea what this means. I DO KNOW that IMR 4064 and Accurate 4064 powder are not the same though. Any idea on what XMR powder is?
I see that Accurate has the "Accurate 4064" powder for sale on their website. However, I cannot find anything on the web that discuss the major differences between the two. I have a 7X57 mauser that I am wanting to load for, but am afraid to use the XMR powder. Is it safe?
Let's hear it!

No it is very unstable you should ship it to me so I can dispose of it properly by loading it and shooting it.
Start with a low load and work up. for your ref.

any idea on what the letters XMR stand for then...?

Fury01It's intended to create a picture in your mind that XMR 4064 is quite a lot like IMR 4064. Which it is. A lot alike. Western Powder has lots of data for it's 4064 powder for us to build loads from.

eagle27Accurate list their 4064 powder as equivalent burn rate to IMR4320 and REL-15 so it is slightly slower than IMR4064 (check their website for the PDF chart).
Often though IMR4064 and IMR4320 are interchangeable as I found when loading 7mm-08.

I have an 8 lb jug of Accurate XMR4350. I think they just replaced the I in IMR with an eXtruded "X".

Lamarextruded magnum rifle.
Accurate has changed numbers and names and dropped post script from many of it's powders over the years.
2495 used to be 2495Br.
it's still the same powder.
Ramshot is also the same powder as accurate, it just has a name on it instead of a number, they are both made by Western powder Co.
Accurate 4064 is slower burning than IMR-4064, which is slower than Hodgdon's 4064.

I don't think Hodgdon makes a H4064.. I think the clostest thing they have is VARGET and H4895 which both are faster burn, then it goes to H380 which is slower. Scott Brigadier makes a 4065..

Lamarvarget is the H-4064.
I was just illustrating how one company's number designation is not the exact same burn speed as another company's.

larrysI emailed Accurate a while back about this and their 4350 powder. Thet said that they are slower burning than IMR. In the case of 4350 about one grain. I would assume 4064 would be similar. I much prefer Accurate powders.

I concur. In working up loads for my .225 Win, I found that AA4064 at 32 grains was about 1 grain slower than IMR 4064 for the same weight bullet to get the same velocity.
If my math is correct that translates into about 3% slower. At least, that's how I would base my calculations for cases of greater and lesser volume.

we don't need to be giving powder 'nick-names'

While some Dupont powders also shared the same number as Hodgdon powders e.g.
IMR4895 H4895
IMR4350 H4350
IMR4831 H4831
They were never equivalent burn rates with the IMR powders most often slightly faster burning than the Hodgdon powder.
There is IMR 4064 but I have never come across H4064, I don't think Hodgdon made such a powder.
Most Hodgdon powders are now made in Australia by ADI with the rifle powders designated AR but renamed for Hodgdon. ADI do not make an H4064 powder, they make AR2208 and call it Varget for Hodgdon.
It is similar to but not the same as IMR4064. From my loading with the 7mm-08 cartridge where I used 44.0grs IMR4064 I now use 42.0grs AR2208/Varget
Here's the full list of ADI powders that are renamed for Hodgdon.
