Hodgdon H-335 In .223 / 5.56 MM ?
What are some of your favorite loads with 55 Gr. FMJ bullets in the AR-15? I just picked up 8 pounds of this, but I've never loaded H-335 before. What has been your experience with it as far as performance and cleanliness? The load on the front of the jug suggests 25.3 Gr. under a 55 Gr. bullet for 3,203 FPS. Just wondered what some of you guys were loading? Thanks in advance, Bill T.

Sierra's hunting load in the AR-15 is 25.7g H335 w/ a 55g bullet. H335 is a GOOD powder for the 223. My bolt gun load is a little more and shoots very well.

Shoots well in 223. I have to reduce 335 loads that were developed this time of year by anywhere from .5-1.0gr for the summer. It is temperature sensitive.

Some folks say use only mag primers with ball powders like H335 and BLC2. I haven't seen any problems using standard primers with either of them.

My load with 55 grainers is 25.6gr with a std Win SR primer. No problems with that load and good accuracy. Also, I use it with 40gr Nosler and Hornady bullets, 27.3gr for an accuracy load. Have gone higher.

H-335 (WC-844) has always been my go-to powder in most cases based on the .222 head size, particularly the .223. I load slightly heavier charges, but this is in a bolt gun that has proven to digest them without pressure signs. The data you've quoted is good for most AR's.

I heard that H335 was a bit of a flamethrower in the .223. Any truth to the rumour?

I shoot 25 grains with a 52 gr SMK. I've been told there is a muzzle flash but I haven't noticed it. It should be a good powder for you.

I shoot a pretty stout load of H335/55 gr. NBT's exclusively and haven't had any problems at night w/muzzle flash.

Winchester developed WC844 in the sixties just for the 5.56/223 with the Army.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to get my hands on an 8 pound jug of WC844. I think I paid $40 bucks for it. It shoots great in the two 223's I have now and it shot super good in the single shot I had when I bought it. I use various bullets of 40 to 55 grains, don't have my data in front of me so you're on your own for powder charges, and I use military brass. Wish I could get another jug for the same price.

I've had very good results using H335 in both my AR (1/9 twist) and my .223 varminter (same twist) using Berger 64 gr FB. But I've found N-135 and now IMR 8028 XBR to be more consistent with all the other components the same and using the same rifles. I have not noticed, nor have I been accused of excess muzzle flash..........

Have had OK luck with H335 in .223, but will use up my DP2200 on 55 gr ball before switching.

H335 also works well with 110 gr SPHs in 6,8 SPC II, 225 gr Hornadys in .376 Steyr, .350 gr MagTips in the .376/.416 Steyr Improved, and is a great powder for the .458 AR cartridge!

Not nearly clean as alot of other powders, and also not the most accurate in my rifle. the thing to watch out for is your pressure and velocity.

Overall, it is very accurate w/ the 55gr. bullets. HOWEVER, in a gas operated gun, it is very dirty. Which is the only reason I stopped using it in gas guns. I prefer TAC or Benchmark (very clean) for the same level of accuracy, but much less mess.

One of the major barrel /Rifle manufactures regularly uses H-335 for printing test targets for their .223 and they don't leave unless #3 print 1/2 MOA .
