What do they call a 257 Roberts Improved necked down to 6MM?

For some reason i was thinking the 244 remington and the 257 roberts were a little diffrent in lenght and taper.

The 6mm remington and the 244 remington are one in the same. the following link explains the name change better than I can.

And if you neck the 6mm down yet again, to 22 caliber, and chamber it in a 1:8 twist barrel, you get the .224 TTH, for "Texas Trophy Hunter."

This is a super flat shooting cartridge that can launch the 75 grain Hornady VMAX at 3400 fps from a 26" tube.

Word is that this wildcat will soon be "canonized" by one of the majors. I thought it was going to be Remington, but rumblings at Winchester are making me believe that it could be them.

This doesn't count Federal and Hornady out, though...

Well see, I suppose...

The 224 TTH could probably shoot a 75gr bullet even faster than 3,400 ft/sec. My 22-243AI will launch a 75gr AMAX bullet at 3,668 ft/sec, and produces spectacular terminal performance on eastern groundhogs.
If the rifle wasn't so darn HEAVY, I'd try it for whitetailing with a heavier bullet.

The 6MM remington and the 257 roberts are based on the 7x57 mauser case which is based on the 8x57 mauser case. I suppose you can put any of those tags on it. As a side note, I own a wildcat introduced to me as the 6.5-.257 roberts improved (257 roberts necked up to 6.5 and improved). If I trace the lineage into europe it comes out to be 6.5x57 mauser improved as there is a 6.5x57 mauser. Or it could have the handle of 6.5-7mm or 8mm or 7.9mm mauser or even 6mm remington improved. Whats in a name?

If you neck it down to .22 caliber, you have a .22 Newton!! which dates to around the first part of the last century. In addition, there was a 6X57mm Mauser cartridge as early as 1897, made by necking down the 7X57mm, and it was pretty much a 6mm Remington! [Razz]

The wildcat-6.5X257Imp. with 40* shoulders is known as the 260AAR, and can be found in Ackley's handloading book under that name. AAR stands for -All Around Rifle. I have had one for about 15yrs. Mine is made with a 1-9.5 twist, and handles bullets from 87gr. to 140gr. very nicely.
It's a great little round. Pete

The 6.5 X 257R was a pretty popular change over for the 6.5 Jap Arisaka after the war. I have in made from a pre war and the old thing is a pretty decent shooter. I also have one of the type 99's made into a .300 Savage that shoots well. The .bullet is a little under size, but at 150 yds does very well.
