165 grain GameKing loads
Does anyone have any loads for the 308 Win for 165 grain GameKings?

I'm in the UK so access to powder etc. can be pretty patchy so I'm interested in loads for any powder based on the fact that I don't know what might be available to me. On balance of probability H414 will probably be available and maybe some other random powders. I know the H414 might not be ideal for lighter heads in 308 but if it is all you've got then you make it work.

Access to bullets can be sporadic as well but I am hopeful of being able to acquire, in due course, some 165 GameKings and maybe some 150 or 165 Hornady spire points.

Thanks in advance for any hints, tips or suggestions.

I pretty much only shoot 165 or 168 gr. bullets in my 308 Winchesters loaded over IMR 4064. You can get pretty much any load book with data for copper jacketed lead bullets in the 165/168 gr. range and use the data with the Sierra Game Kings of the same weight.

H414 is the same powder as Winchester 760. I've tried that in the past with bullets heavier than 165 gr. and it worked pretty well.

As was mentioned, W-760 is basically the same as H-414, just different lots of the same powder. I use 49.0 gr. of W-760 which is max for my .308 Ruger RSI with 18.5" barrel. velocity is right at 2550 FPS and was good enough to kill a large Mule Deer at a lasered 250 yards. If your rifle has a 22" barrel, expect right around 2610 FPS.
The loas is as follows:
165 gr. Speer Hot-Core (spitzer flat base bullet)
49.0 gr. W-760
Winchester brass and primer (WLR) the standard primer, not the magnum version.
The several deer I've taken witht hat load have either dropped on the spot on moved less than 30 feet before expiring. I imagine the Sierra Pro-Hunter would work just as well, but I haven't tried it. BTW, that is my favorite .308 Win. load.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I also dropped Sierra a line and they just sent me their 308 data but they didn't try H414 with the 165 grain Gameking. However, they suggested 47.5 - 51 grains of H414 which is pretty much in line with what everyone here is suggesting.

It might be a little while before I can make up some loads but I need to start looking around for more powder supplies now so I have them to hand.

If I get a decent load then I will file a report.

I've had good luck with 47.0 gr of H414 in my 308, using Lapua cases (which are a bit heavier than some).
They did fairly well out of my Rem 700 LTR, with around 0.6 MOA out to 300m, which was the furthest I tested them to.
The SGK did well on the 2 Fallow I have taken with them, with bang-flops in each case.

However, I did not pursue testing as I was given a large batch of SAKO 180gr soft points, and they do just as well.

Best of luck with your load development.

Cheers, Dave.

42.6 grains of 2208/Varget behind the Speer 165 BTSP works for me with Lapua brass and Federal Standard primers.

You should get something close to this with the Sierras.

My latest Sierra load manual shows 48.4 gr. of W-760 for 2750 FPS. However, they cheat and use a 26" barrel. How many sporters in .308 come with a 26" barrel. Methinks it's total bsflag coffee. I'm starting to see this in other load manuals as well. This ain't cheatin' fair.

My Remmie 700VS shoots 'em into a half inch using re-15 and a gm210m primer.

Think about it use a 28" barrel get high velocities and the barrel life is not shortened....that is cheating alright.
