9.3x62 as a varmit rifle?

Bought some cheapie 270 gr. Speer for plinking. They go really fast!

With RL-15, Lapua brass, CCI 200,

X grs. 2572, 2529, 2545 fps
X+1 grs., 2584 fps
X+2 grs., 2649 fps

And no signs of high pressure.

I wonder how fast these things can go?

Haven't shot any of those, but mine works pretty good for coyotes with 59 grains of RL15 and a 286 NPartition.

YOU boys don't feel that you are slightly undergunned do ya?

personally, I never carry anything under a 416 bore for varmints...

You should KNOW by now the 9.3x62 is no stopping rifle so if the sod poodles and jackrabbits begin to charge, then you'd better have a climbable tree nearby!

Here's the hottest handload I could find for the 9.3 X 62

270 Speer SP Hodgdon BL-C(2) 66.0 2,548
Remarks: COL: 3.280"; 47,400 cup

47,400 CUP is roughly 55,000 PSI so there's still room to go IMO....

That said I suspect you're near the end of the reasonable velocity spectrum for that round.

Not sure what it is you're referring to as hot. My loads?

Anyway, the 270 gr. Speers are just for punching holes and will leave it at 2500 fps, but I never saw any high pressure signs even at 2650 fps. Go figure.

I have killed deer and wild pigs with the Speer 270 gr bullet at 2490 fps out of my 9,3 double. It has given me excellent performance at that velocity.

I didn't mean that "hot" would dismantle anything; just higher than what would be considered "normal" i.e., 60,000psi. I don't know specifically what powder you are using but with the ones I have tried, it would take 68,000 to get that velocity (60 cm CZ 550). If you are wanting to stay in the 270/30-06 pressure range those top velocities are pretty well it for 250 grain bullets. From what I've tested (and I don't claim to be perfect) 2450-2475 is about tops for the 286, 2525-2550 for 270 , and 2600-2625 for 250 grain, haven't played with anything lighter.

9.3x62 is a real hard one to get a handle on. I got some factory loads (Lapua 285 gr) and those were the most anemic excuses for I cartridge I have ever seen; 2140fps @ 40,300psi. Could have shot those out of a M94 Win. I suppose someone might have an old Krag in 9.3 but damn....sure makes it hard to set a base line for "real world" pressures.

Email me your powder and I will see what I get the next time I fiddle with that cartridge. I've got some Speer 270s to test with.

Don't laugh- I have shot coyotes and does during our winter season with a .416 Rigby Ruger and 370 North Forks at 2530 fps. I don't know of any better way to get familiar with a big bore, as I can't shoot a couple dozen cape buff here in Missouri. Those NF bullets will expand even on a whitetail, I shot a big 150+ whitetail last year with the 9.3x62 and 250 NF on the run at 180 yards. It rolled him with finality he ended up facing the way he come from.

I've taken more ground squirrels and coyotes with my .375 H&H over the last 5 years than all my varmint rifles put together because the .375 is what I carry the most. No complaints by the varmints yet.

The 9.3x62 should do a great job.

YOu boys that are varmint shooting with 375s and 416s.. are definitely running with the big dogs...

Me and my little 223s ands 22.250s are just going to humbly follow behind and take a shot or two at what's left...

If you guys can hit it with the bigger bores, you got my respect...

I don't care what a man carries as long as he can shoot and it and get results....

But I can't imagine shooting a 375 H & H for 250 to 400 shots in a day, like my 223s get at times...

I stand humbly in awe....

We have loaded for 8 rifles in 9.3x62. Our favorite load is a moly coated Barnes X bullet in 250gr. The load is 62gr H4895 with a Federal 210M primer. The velocity with a 22"barrel is 2625f/sec. and the velocity with a 26"barrel is 2700f/sec.. The Northfork 250gr soft point is 2750f/sec. with the same charge. This is a very consistant load in all of my rifles! It is a wonderful loading and has yielded all manner of game in the USA and Africa. Outstanding accuracy and performance. Don't look for this load in any manual it isn't there, but this is one sweet load.
