Richard Waynefur freindly bullet for .243win.
I shot a coyote yesterday with my .243 using 85 gr. sierra bthp bullet. The exit hole was big enough to shove your hand in.I am looking for accuracy and less damage, anyone tryed out the new Hornady Match bullet's? The weight of bullet really doe's not matter, but i would like to go as light as i can, without becoming a hand grenade. Any info would be appreciated:Rick.

LWDWhat about a solid? Barnes makes a spitzer solid in .243. I think Sierra makes a FMJ.

ramrod340I used a 22-250 FMJ on coyotes when we were wanting to keep the fur. Never tried one in 243 that I can remember.

In .243 FMJs might be different, but I didn't have too much success with FMJs out of a .22 calibre rifle. It'd kill the coyote but sometimes it took a while for the coyote to realize it was dead. And, of course, he was covering ground while he was waiting to get the word.
Aim for the exit hole

Every deer I shot went through, 195 lbs field dressed quartering toward through one shoulder.

Mke / TxYears ago I loaded the 90grSpeer FMJ to about 2300fps for similar use. It shot POA to my standard hunting load at 50yds which was about where I was using them to. At 100 they were still only about 1.5" lower so still good for head shots on still targets.
I used them for turkey and for small critters like pest coons and a couple of yotes. Most everything shot dropped on the spot or within 20yds of where it was hit.
Granted I wasn't stretching them out to long ranges but the slower moving bullets seemed to put more whack on the critter than the faster load which zipped right on through.

vapodogI'll bet that If I drive to Minnesota, I can find Miles in a day or two....all I need to do is drive by all the states libraries looking for a guy searching the archives for very large deer and aslo having a Wellstone bumper sticker

Jim M.Consider uising soft point bullets or partition type bullets. HPs usually open to rapidily, depending on the velocity.
Here are just some of the mannnnny possibilities:
Nosler partition .243 85g BC 345
95 g .365
100 g .384
Berger .243 95g Match hunting VLD .486
posibly match target bullets 62,65,68,70, 90g.
in .17 bullets the berger match 25g is well thought of for fox and coyotes (usually does not tear a large hole.
Speer, Sierra, Barnes, etc. take your pick.
HPs will usually produce larger holes.

It always seemed to me that velocity was the culprit and not so much bullet style.
If you use a heavy bullet it will be slower and then load it to the minimum listed in your manuals.
If you're serious about the pelts you might want to look at a .22 Hornet.

Doc224/375Head shots saves hides and there's no need in worrying about exit hole sizes . Use an Accurate load and Rifle !!!.

Barnes SPITZER; SOLID and BANDED bullet works very well.
Just favor in front of the diaphragm. Small hole in and small hole out.
Somme of the sintered type bullets work as well. Once inside they turn into eight gazillion pieces, none of which have the energy to pass through the far hide. These days those bullets can hold up to some fairly high velocities. Just experiment a little.

QuintusI shoot an AR for yotes 90 percent of the time now, but 15 years ago when we saw 50 fox for every coyote I shot the 80 grain Hornady FMJ and they worked great for fox. If your calling I think it might work well for you and cheaply. I swithched to 223 when we stared running dogs and chasing yotes just for the firepower since they are always running wide open and good shot placement is anywhere that draws blood.

wistrapperI loaded some 62 grain Barnes Varmint Grenades at around 3400 fps for a friend of mine a couple of years ago. He reported back to me that heart/lung and head shots had little pelt damage, gut shots split them open like a canoe.
