long range variants
i got a savage 25 lvt in a .223 and are trying to work up some loads that can shoot 600 yrds + accurately.
what are some factors that would give me the edge like O.A.l, a list of few good powders for the caliber at that range, a good bullet weight for a 1:9 twist, good velocity, any other factors that my apply to me
ALL ADVICE IS APPRECIATED!

Savage Axis- Black Hills Match brass, Hornady 68gr Match bullet, IMR 3031-21.0gr CCI400- COL 2.300" The next best load is same brass-Sierra 69gr match bullet #1380-IMR4198-18.5gr-CCI400-COL 2.300" Brass sorted by weight & outside neck turned. Groups run 1/2" to 3/4" @ 100 yds. This CCI400 primer shows signs of pressure. Switching to Rem 7 1/2 would be a better choice. Adjust loads.

My load won't work for you, 77 SMK 24 grains of Varget, but a 69 SMK and work up a weight with Varget.

If you know someone who has 77 SMK's you could try a group with them at 2 to 300 yards but I think your twist is a a little slow for them.

I agree that CCI 400's are a soft primer cup, I've pierced 3 out of 500 and they get a little flat. Wolf and Winchester Small Rifle have not had the same issue.

243winxb, is that the Hornady 8th edition? If so I think I need to get it. Does it have 2 volumes or am I misreading the note on the bottom of the page? For the 5.56 is the max load of Varget 23.5 with a 75 gr HPBT? I think the info I have is .223 not 5.56.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

the best load you can have for 600 yd 223 shooting is a ballistic calculator,a wind direction calculator, and a mirage calculator.
shoot some groups at 600 yds the learn how to read mirage and the wind.

This is the best load I've found for my 223 with a 1:10 twist barrel. It also works well in an AR with a 1:7 twist barrel.

I have to seat the bullet a bit off the lands due to magazine length considerations but if your gun will permit, it might shoot better closer to the lands.

I use a Leupold Mark 4 with a custom made turret for the above load and puts the bullets on target out to at least 400 yards; I haven't been able to test it over that range though.

25 grains of most of the mid range powders and a 75 to 80 grain A Max or match bullets..

RL 15, Varget, W 748, BLC2, 4895 ( either brand) 4064 ( either brand), AR Comp, and a host of others..

I run many of the above in a 12BVSS Savage with a one in 9 twist...600 to 800 yds and more....

IMR 4895 is a common one I use..
