Scrap brass
Over the years I have taken any scrap brass I have had. Bent, cracked, berdan prime ect juck brass and thrown them into a bucket.

Well after 25 years I findly got around and took them to the scrap dealer I had 33 lbs of the stuff. Well I collected just over 21 dollars I guess I can go out and buy some more powder and primers now.

Just thought this might be interisting info for the forum.

I know how you feel. I own a bar that we keep all the aluminum cans. A couple of weeks ago we finally got around to getting them to the recyclers, it took a horse trailer but they we worth $200. Not too bad for 6 months of non-work.

P Dog,

What kind of re-cycler took the brass? I called
my local recycle place where they take anything.
I mean ANYTHING...old appliances, old cars,
aluminum, steel...ANYTHING, and they refused
to take my bucket of brass. I don't recall the
reason, but it was a big NO, so I ended up putting
it in the regular trash...Now I think that may have
been a mistake.

Well DUUUUUHHHHHHH on me! Probably tossed away enough old cases to have purchased a new S&S Remington WITH a HUGE Leupold - maybe a few of them.

Thanks p dog shooter for an outstanding tip!

The only brass I toss is the non reload-able type. I keep every reload-able type of brass I find occasionally someone I know will need some brass and if I have no current need for it they end up with nice clean reload-able brass. Sometimes I make a few bucks but I get more enjoyment and exercise scrounging brass. I do not store dirty brass it goes into the tumbler when I get home. I meet a lot of interesting people at the range while looking for brass and have struck up some very interesting conversations. The wife says why do you save all of that brass I ask her why do you think you need so much Tupperware she says just because I need it. Enough said.

I`d call around. I talked to a guy that collects range scrap where ever he goes and he claimed some dealers are afraid of primers. I don`t recall what exactly the problem was but it was something as I recall with the smelting process. He did have a couple dealers he took his to though.

Frownermany of the scrape metal dealers around here won't touch the stuff. Confusedroger

The guy I sold mine to didn't think twice about it. All he said was cartridge brass .65 cents a pound.

I ran into the same problem with our local scrap dealer.
"The only way I'll take that stuff is if you melt it first."
So I threw it in the trash.
Next day I received a "nasty" phone call from our city service director. He went on about how dangerous bullets were, and that if I had any more to throw away I was to call him for "special" pickup! At this point I edcuated him about empty brass vs. live ammunition. And that he was not to bother me again over this matter. I haven't heard a peep from him or his office since.

I wonder if many of them think that one needs a FFL to handle brass.

Sounds kind of strange I think that a lot of people are miss informed on scrap.

Take it to Iraq and let the streetkids have it. I have heard (I can't say anything more) that the little kids are running into the streets during firefights between Good and Evil to pick up the spent nickel-plated casings of our ammo. As if our men didn't have enough to worry about. Now they have to try to kill the enemy without killing innocent kids in the crossfire. None of this would obtain if Iraq had had a free market economy backed up by constitutional law for the past 36 years.

I was thinking that the scrap dealers might be worried about getting a live round in their melt pot. Might it make for some nasty splattering?

Most of the time the scrap yards around here won't take it either. I think it depends on who you talk to or what day it is.

I save mine until I have more than 100 lbs and get about 15% more per pound for it. They take it in the plastic buckets no questions asked. The place I use is Newell Recycling in San Antonio, TX. Haven't been there in 2 years, but the buckets are filling up.

Our gun club has big plastic buckets folks can throw their scrap brass into. The all-volunteer unpaid range officers are welcome to sort out any reloadable stuff they want, for their own use. The non-reloadable or otherwise unwanted stuff (except rimfire brass) is gathered into a 55 gallon drum. When we get a drum full, we sell it to the local scrap metal dealer and use the money to buy beer for the annual range officers' picnic.

What do we do with the rimfire brass? Spread it in front of the benches( free "gravel").

Remove primers and crush the brass with plairs.

Don't they still sell dies to turn empty .22 cases into 6 mm bullet's?
