A friend of mine wants to wants to get a new rifle. We have it narrowed down to 25-06, bolt action, and heavy barrel. Anybody got any suggestions on what manufacturer. He is open to about any and maybe even a custom job. Thanks

From what I've been hearing from others is that the CZ550 is the best value on the market today.

Don't overlook the TIKKA...I don't know if they chamber the varmit model in that cal. Good value for the money!

Remington Sendero, inspect it carefully before you buy.

I recently purchased a SAKO 75 in 25-06, stainless barrel and action, synthetic stock. This rifle is very accurate and Im now in the process of load development. My first tests were Nosler 100gr BT and Hornady 75gr. VMAX bullets. Velocity with AA 3100 powder is nearly the same as in the Nosler manual.

I know that it's not safe to generalize from a single example, but I worked a lot with a Tikka 25/06 trying to find an accurate load for it. I was not successful. I like the look and feel of the rifle, but that particular one was a dog in the shooting department.

If I were buying it and I wanted the best chance of getting good accuracy, I'd get a Remington 700 unless I could afford an expensive custom made rifle.

From the experience from my 300Win mag Sendero....go with the Remington!

I'd seriously consider the 700 sendero. I'm thinking about one for myself. I don't own a 257 cal and I think I need one.

Try this rifle with some good glass, a trigger job, and bedding and I'll guarantee you won't be sorry for the money.

Ricochet: Your friend is money ahead to go for a custom job. He'd never regret the accuracy from a top shelf Shilen, Hart, Krieger etc. Factory guns are always a grab bag- sure a good percentage shoot well, but the custom barrel delivers top accuracy almost always, cleans easier, fouls less if properly broke in, and need not be that much more expensive. In some cases- less than a factory gun.
