8x57 Real World Data

Keeping in mind I have Speer, Barnes, Hornady, Hodgdon, A-Square, Nick Harvey Reloaders and Accurate's reloading manuals, does anyone have data for 220 grain bullets? If not then 200 grainers?
I have a good selection of IMR and Hodgdon, some RL-15 and 22.

Well, I don't have data for your powders, but the 200 gr Partition shoots great with 46-47 gr Norma 202. Runs at up to 2500+ fps in 24"-26" bbls.

A buddy tried 203-B with, according to him, great accuracy and velocity. Norma states a max of 50.1 gr for 2590 fps using their excellent 196 gr Oryx bullet.

It lists the 220 gr Hornady.

I doubt that you will be very happy with the performance. That bullet is designed for the 8mm Rem MAG velocities. It may not open up at 8 x 57 speeds, as the top is only 2200 muz.

The "best" bullet for the 8 x 57 is the Remington 185 gr Pt SP Core Lokt. Midway has them and they work great.

I am going to use Hodgdon for H-4831sc 57 grains. They list about 2385 fps. With this 29.1 inch barrel it will add another 135 fps or so.
Problem is I cannot stuff 57 grains in there under the 220 grain Hornady. The throat in this Persian is way too short. I am going into Anchorage this coming weekend and am going to have the throat lengthened by about 0.300".
With the Hornady the COL is only 3.075" on the nose. Too much bullet in the case.

Roger: The Sierra manual shows loads to 2300 fps with their fine 220-grain boattail. Max load with IMR4350 is 50.1 grains, accuracy load is 48.1 at 2200 fps. They used Win cases, Rem 9 1/2 primer, 23-inch barrel and an OAL of 3.250 with the 220. Sierra suggests the 220 is too heavily constructed to perform reliably on game at lower velocities.

Check out WWW.norma.cc i belive there is some data for 196 grs bullet, BUT only for Norma powders of course.
Also try The Vihtavuori homepage, maybe they have some loads to. This is a very common kaliber in scandinavia.

The 227 grain bullet was standard for the 8x57J but 196 gr. was the standard number for the 8x57JS in the postwar period. That said, both DWM and RWS loaded 227 grain bullets in the 8x57JS until the late 1960s. These bullets all had big round noses with lots of exposed lead. Norma was the last maker of this bullet but they disappeared from the bullet list sometime in the 1980s.

To be honest, the .30/06 has it all over the 8x57JS in 220 grain weights. Do like the German does: Trust in God and the 196 grain SJRN in 8x57. RWS makes a KS bullet in 227 grains but it is for the 8x68S Magnum and they do not recommend it except for very close range finishing shots at game. It probably doesn't expand even then.

As the esteemable David Moses :-) (hi, glad to see you again) has already noted, RWS offers a 14,5 grams (224 grains) cone point Kegelspitzgeschoss. Their reloading handbook offers load data with this bullet for the 8 x 57 IS, 8 x 57 IRS, 8 x 60 S, 8 x 60 RS, 8 x 64 S, 8 x 65 RS, 8 x 68 S, 8 mm Rem.Mag., 8 x 75 RS.

It is true that the 14,5 g KS was "specifically indeed for stronger game" [according to European standards] when it was introduced in 1967 in the 8 x 68 S. The RWS handbook recommends this bullet in 8 x 57 IS only for driven hunts and final downing shots. How well it expands at the lower 8 x 57 IS velocities, I cannot tell. However, an 8 x 68 S at 100 or 150 metres is not all *that* faster than a 8 x 57 IS at 1 to 30 metres. The DEVA handbook (4th edition) gives V-3 velocities of 705 and 675 metres with Vihtavuori N 160 and Rottweil R 904 respectively.
