sputsterA-Square??
I had been reading about the .338-06 and its kickass properties. Also heard about "A-Square" getting its name attached to the cartridge...but then saw some unhappy comments about A-Square. I didn't know about that...can someone bring me up to speed?

<eldeguello>A-Square has indeed gotten its' name attached to what is simply the .30/'06 case with the neck expanded to use .338" bullets. Or, in other words, it's the old .333 OKH firing .338" diameter bullets instead of .333" diameter bullets. Weatherby is now chambering their ultralight rifle for .338/'06 "A-Square" also, and I would not be surprised to see others do so too. It is an excellent cartridge.
I know nothing about the A-Square company, good or bad, but the .338/'06 has been around as a wildcat ever since about the time the .338 Win Mag. made good .338" bullets widely available.

It is true that you can both read and hear lots of bad things about A Square.
However that is not relevant to the 338/06 with their name on it. A Square went to the trouble (and I assume cost) to register the 30/06 with The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI)which then standardised the 338/06 A Square.
In other words the Weatherby rifles that are chambered in 338/06 A Square will have the same chamber dimensions as registered with SAAMI. Let us say that Remington then decided to chamber for 338/06 A Square and both RCBS and Hornady made dies for 338/06 A Square and Norma made brass in 338/06 A Square....then it would all work together, just like a 270 Winchester.
