Tyler KempNeed advice ASAP!
I'm going to shoot some long range stuff tomorrow, I've been trying to find a load for 95 grain Bergers for weeks, nothing better than 3/4" of an inch.
So today I bought some Sierra 95 grain SMKs (never saw these before). Question is, how far off the lands? I'm just going to load about 50 all the same, without even testing, just to shoot tomorrow. I'm thinking 48 grains IMR 4831 or a bit more IMR 7828 and whatever distance off the lands you guys suggest.
Thanks!
Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

vapodogf you can do it then load them just to the lands....it's my best guess.

buckshotNormally I'd second that opinion, but with an untried load I'd back the bullet off .010" No need risking a pressure spike with unknown variables.

Tyler KempThat danged 6mm Ackley.
I know 95 grain Bergers seated .010" in the lands is safe with the powder charges listed, 95 SMK's shouldn't raise any pressures should they?

craigsterGo .010" off and call it good enough for this time around.

Tyler KempLoads are barely off lands. Seated to where I just saw rifling then a bit deeper to where I didn't. 45 rounds better shoot reasonably tomorrow!

Tyler KempGOOD RESULTS!
The Sierra's shot about an inch at 200 yards (didn't try 100), and I was able to place hits wherever I wanted on a ram at 550 yards. Except give him an eyeball. Anywhere else I could hit, chest, neck, back leg, etc. Shot two groups of around 3 inches at 550 yards on the ram, didn't measure, but the splatters were very close, two touching each time. For some reason I only need 5 minutes of elevation, compared to 6.9 minutes that the computer guessed. My only explanation is that the BC of the bullet must be much higher at the velocity my gun was firing them. 3420 fps, 5 minutes come up from 200 yards.

ireload2With all the gee whizzer bullets these days it is still very hard to beat Sierra's accuracy
