Reduced loads for 30-06
I have a 30-06 that I load Nosler 165 gr. for, and I am looking for a reduced load with a cast bullet that will print point of aim at approx. 25 yards without changing the scope adjustment. I want to carry a few when I go hunting so I can shoot small game on my way back to camp for pot meat.I tried some 120 gr. cast (that was all I could lay my hands on), and the best I could do was get them to print about 12 inches low. To my thinking I need a heavier bullet going real slow to accomplish this. Has anyone ever tried this, and if so what was the results? thanks for the help. Good luck and good hunting. Ernest

I don't know if this load would work for you or not. I use XMP with 150gr cast bullets and get around 1950-2000 Muz. Vel.

Eterry, 12 inches low at 25 yards is much lower than I would expect. And my experience is that a heavier and slower bullet will be lower still. Its not like a revolver.

Regardless of caliber I always carry some 1000fps rounds with cast bullets when hunting. Mostly with variable scopes with duplex-reticle. With such a scope its no problem to find out at what magnification the bullet will hit just on top of the bottom post at 50 yards.

Goran, thanks for the reply, I have never dealt much with cast rifle bullets, so I assumed it would work like a revolver, heavier and slower bullets print higher. I loaded some 165 gr. cast this weekend, ranging from around 1000 fps to 1450 fps., according to the manual. I am looking forward to trying them out, but it is so hot here, 108 today. Maybe I will try them this weekend. Good luck and good hunting. Ernest

P.S. If these loads dont prove satisfactory I will try the 120's again, loaded to higher velocities. Maybe that will be the ticket. Thanks
