I still remember when Hodgdon ran out of surplus 4831 and "Newly Manufactured" 4831 came on to the market. The powder I have was stored properly and is in perfect condition. When I have time, I'll load up the surplus powder and the current "Extreme" 4831 to see how the velocity and accuracy in my 280 Ackley compares.

Gotta love it when a plan comes together...

I'm still using some surplus 4831 and it still produces some of the most consistent velocities and best accuracy of any power I use.

I have some still kicking around too.
it seems a bit slower and 'dryer' than the new stuff.

I burn a lot of it up in my 30-30's with cast bullets.

I used a lot of it 35-40 years ago. Worked great in my 25-06.

I have used 4831 with good results. It's my #2 pick after IMR 4350.

I purchased a 150 lb. keg in a stainless sealed screw in cap container with a heavy 2x4 frame for shipping. That was 40 years ago and it was probably 75 years old..I still have about 40 pounds of that stuff and its value is as much as $60. a pound and climbing in some circles...

I use 62 grs in a 270 case for 3250 FPS with a 130 gr. bullet in a 22 inch barrel...Thats the old Jack O'Connor load in his writtings..pressure wise is said to be 40,000 PSI in some books with that load and a 30-06 case will hold no more and that in WW cases only I believe..Maybe RWS, best I recall..Like all 4831 it cuts grs like all get out, so I actually prefer H414 or WW760 these days..That said you have a great powder, but weigh each charge...
