Whats happening to my brass?
I just tried a new load in my Ruger#3 in 30-40 Krag. The fired cases look like they let a lot of gas passed the neck area, but not all the way to the rim. The load is 110 gr Sierra HP, atop of 44gr. of IMR 3031. This isn't even max (OAL is 2.289) and the fired primers are bearly flattened. The brass is about 5 years old and has been loaded many times, is the brass getting brittle? Time to order more brass??

I would anneal the brass if all else looks good. The neck is probably work hardened.

Your pressures are likely not high enough for the brass to expand and seal the shoulder. That's the usual reason for carbon on the body of the case. Don't have a manual handy but if the load is well below recommended max, then I'll bet money on your load being to light.
