Playing with a really big thingy.
Playing with a really big thingy.
The standard headspace thingy once made by Stoney Point and now by Hornady does its job well but there is one thing it does not do.
I was curious about the shoulder angle of fired 6.5X53R Dutch Mannlicher cases from my sort of rare M95 Dutch Navy rifle.
To check this angle I took a couple of fired cases to work and put them on a 30" comparator at 20X magnification. Needless to say it was easy to measure the shoulder at 24 degrees.
I also checked the head to .375 datum line dimension. It was 1.708" same as I get with my Stoney Point thingy.
Next thing to do. Check cases from my M95 Dutch carbine and measure the abominable shoulder dimensions of a #4 Mk 1 Lee-Enfield. I think I will try an even bigger thingy for this. They have a 50" comparator at work too.
Sorry thingy haters.

rcamugliaThat is a big Thingy.
I'm surprised woods hasn't replied trying to find out all about it and how and where to get one.
Tell us about it. I still can't figure it out from the photo. My gunsmith has a comparator but it is arcane in comparison. Like a rear projector but gets the job well done.
I'm envious!

Looks like something that came from alien technology and Area 51!

Depending on how large the object to be measured is and the tolerance, magnification can be set to the following 5X, 10X, 20X and 50X.
The object is set on the precision table and is oiented and focused.
Then the cross hairs on the big screen are aligned where ever you want to measure from.
The digital read out is zeroed in X, Y and theta.
Move the table with a soft touch joy stick or the lead screw knobs. Rotate the reticle on the big screen by hand. Take the measurements off of the digital read out.
At 20X .001 appears to be .020. It is easy to measure to +/- .001.
The light is projected from the vertical arm on the near side of the table past the work on the table. You measure looking at the big screen.
For real operators some of these have electronic edge finders and can be programmed.
Just push a button and it measures multiple features automatically.

Hot CoreHey Woods, I really find it difficult to believe you do not have one. And setting next to it should be a 6x6 CMM.
Hey HC
I would imagine this is the biggest thingy you have
when you upgraded from your smaller one

Hot CoreI could have said "Rosie", but I figure a Homicide would be involved in that situation.
