Rifle cartridges-Progressive or single stage
As you can gather from my other post I am looking hard at buying a Dillion 550 progressive press and had another question ( thanks for the patience guys) about it . Does a progressive make as good a round as a single stage , if I do my part of course. Thanks.

I have two Dillions capable of loading rifle ammo, I've yet to load a single round on the Dillons.
Not sure just why I've not done it, maybe I'm a bit hide bound. I load all of my rifle ammo on a Bonanza CoAx. The most rifle ammo I load is couple hundred rounds per caliber per session, so it may very well be that I'm too lazy to change the Dillon's set up.

I grew up loading on a Herters single stage press, then a Pacific, RCBS, finally a Dillon. I still have the Pacific for some calibers that I do not load a lot for and cannot justify buying the accessories for the Dillon. I have loaded for accuracy side by side using the Dillon in progressive status, as a single stage, and the Pacific single stage.

In this instance I took extreme care to load the same loads for my 30-06 and AR15 (.223 rem.)that I knew were accurate by weighing each powder charge in the single stage operations to within 1/10 of a grain. I loaded the same loads on the Dillon (550)in progressive manner taking my time once the desired combination of powder charge, seating depth, etc. was acheived.

The results:
With the 30-06 each batch of loads grouped similarly, (sub minute of angle at 600 yards).
With the AR15, each batch could be held in the X ring of a standard 100 yard high power rifle target.

Conclusion:
When I want to spend more time shooting than reloading, I use the Dillon in progressive manner. If I really want to limit any possible variables, I load single stage and measure out every load. However, I am convinced that this is only a psychological advantange. All of my hunting loads are loaded on the Dillon once a load is deemed desirable.

P.S. - I do take pains to select a ball type or fine grain powder to drop consistant loads from the Dillon when in progressive mode, i.e. H4831SC for the 30-06 and Varget for the .223.
