Neck Trim / Neck Size ?

Fire forming brass for .223 Ackley Improved. And it's all new to me.

I have Win. brass that is fire formed for this rifle BEFORE it was rechambered. (Yeah, I know . . . sort of a moot point.)

Now . . .

I want to neck turn and fire form for AI. Do I want to:

Turn the neck and then neck size only?

Neck size only and then turn the neck?

Neck turn and full-length size?

Fire form and neck turn in the next cycle of reloading?

Also . . .

I have some cases that I've fire formed, Lake City Arsenal brass. I trimmed the neck, but not far enough down toward the shoulder. So I trimmed again. Measuring the brass at the neck, the trimmed brass is 0.011" while new, untrimmed brass runs about 0.013". Should I just toss this stuff and chalk it up to the learning experience?

To help, need to know what dies,turning tool make. Is chamber tight necked? The ALSO part, do you mean TRIM OR TURN?

Sigh . . .

Yeah, I mean TURN, and NOT "trim."

Standard .223 AI chamber, nothing tricky. We've removed "free-bore" but no tight neck.

Sinclair NT-300 Neck Turning Tool, oversized and std. mandrel, Sinclair expander body.

RCBS neck size die.

I think the sequence is:

1) expand neck w/ oversize mandrel & expander body.

2) turn neck w/ std. mandrel

3) neck size brass

4) load and fire form for AI.

This is all new territory. Thanks for coaching me out of any stupid moves.

I tossed the other brass -- chalk up to "learning experience."

I have not loaded this caliber or used your turning tool so this info MAY BE WRONG. You do not have a tight neck, so fire form first. Then full length resize without the expander, pushing the shoulder back as far as possible.Then expand the neck with turning tool and turn all the way to the shoulder. Sorry i can"t be more helpfull. 243winxb

Well . . .

Once the case is fire formed for Ackley Improved there's no "full length" resizing that's going to be done.

I can run the neck sizer without an expander and push the shoulder back a bit. But then if I run the neck expander on the Sinclair turning set up, I need to re-size the neck again, I think.

Hmmmmmm . . .

I think I'll ask Sinclair.
