300 Weatherby with a 24" barrel
I have a Rem. Classic in .300 Weatherby and I'm loading 83 gr. of H4831 with a 165 gr. SST. What kind of velocity could I expect with this load. I need to get a chronograph but for now I was just wondering. Any suggested loads for the 165 gr. SST's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the replies. PaLuke

Quickload thinks it will be a mild load at 3070 and 54k pressure. I can tell you from experience that the bullet (sst) will be terribly explosive under 300 yds shooting.

Thanks for the reply. I see that in the Barnes manual the data for the 165 TSX is 85.5 grs. of H4831 is max. Would you recommend the TSX as opposed to the SST. Also which powder do you recommend for a .300 in a 24" barrel. Thanks again for the reply. PaLuke

The TSX would be much better than the SST. I would try RL22 or H1000 powder in that large case. I use H1000 in my 300 Winchester mag. Great performance with it. I use RL22 in my 7mm Rem mag. Great performance there as well. Hegins...hmmm. Pottsville here.

Do some searches on the SST. Most people find it to be a very accurate but very frangible bullet much more so than the standard Hornady Interlocks, Nosler Ballistic Tips, or Sierra Gamekings. I would be afraid of the results from a .300 Wby.

To use the TSX is to love it. They are usually pretty easy to find a very accurate load for and kill like nobody's business. Also do some searches there.

Here's a thread from last year about my success with the 168 TSX in a .30-06. It also has a link to another thread from the previous year.

Thanks for the replies. Woodrow S, Hegins here. I lost my places to shoot when I switched jobs, do you know of any good ranges to shoot at? I hunted Blackwood for years. Take care, PaLuke

Somewhere in the archives is a "Handloader" article that focused on the 300 Weatherby in a 24" barrel. I'll see if I can dig it up and get the issue number.

My Howaby Vanguard likes H4831SC and several 180gr bullets.

It also likes RL-25 and 200gr Game Kings

OK, I'm a couple days late.

I found the Handloader article. It's a 300 Weatherby update.

It's in Handloader #212, August 2001

The article was by Ken Waters. He used a 24" Howa/Vanguard. I used it as a reference because my Howaby Vanguard is the same gun.

IMO the original .300 wby loads were Hornady interlocks.......and I agree here that the SSTs may not be the best in the fast .30 cal
