IMR powders are probably the most popular and easiest to get. My favorite in my pre 64 M70 with the 130 gr. Sierra is IMR 4350. Also an excellant choice would be IMR 4831 as well as Jack O'connors IMR 4064.

Thanks for the replies..I have been looking at IMR powders..I shot the .270 for the first time this past weekend and sighted it in at 100 yds. I was shooting 1" groups. That was with Remington Cor-lokt 130 grain ammo. So i have heard that once i start reloading my own i may have to re-sight my rifle in again..is this true?

I shot a .270 for a long time and used H4831 in WW cases and a 130 grain bullet with great success.

Yes you may, and more than likely will. Bullet weight, powder type, charge weight, primer type will generally result in different points of impact.

More than likely yes you will have some adjustments for different loads to have the same point of impact.

Add me to the list of fans of IMR powders too. I have loads using IMR4350 in my 7mm, 300WM and my 375H&H all shooting sub 1" groups at 100 yards. However I have also had good results with Alliant's RL22.

Around here Hodgdon is what is sold the most. I was even just at Bass pro getting some 4300 and the guy took me in the powder room to get it, and the clerk said they sell mostly hodgdon by far

IMR4831 has worked so well for me in my 270 with 130 and 140 SGK / BT / and AB that I've never tried another powder.

If I only had one powder to grab for the 270 it would be IMR 4831.

As usual just my $.02

You might be right. In my young and foolish days I would get new engineers straight out of college comming to work for me in WTX. We would have plenty of deer hunting trips so they all needed to buy rifles. Which I was happy to supply being an FFL and all. Big Grin Being young and STUPID I loaded ammo for all of them. Over about a 5 year period I bought 9 or 10 MKX Viscount 270s. They all would shoot the same load of 130gr speers and 4831 to sub moa. Looking back at my notes I simply wrote 4831 Roll Eyes But since at the time I was HOARDING my remaining $1/# surplus 4831 I THINK I was buying IMR. But I sure wouldn't bet a coffee either way. I doubt you would go wrong with either.

I think you can see from the above posts there is no single MOST popular powder. You will have to start with one of the suggestions and experiment like the rest of us to find the most popular powder for you.

Yes I have seen that lol..My local gun range has a nice variety of different powders..I will do as you suggest, just buy some different kinds, load them up and see which one works best for me.
