MADISONWhen I had my #3 Ruger, in 45-70 I shot the 300 grain Hornady HP behind 20 to 22 grains of 2400.

Just got back from the range using my Winchester 1886 in 45-70. I use a 350 grain cast bullet, Saeco, with 52 grains of RL-7. Been using this load for a year working my way up to using a 445 grain cast bullet with IMR 4895 or IMR 4064. I want to test the 445 grain loads in my Siamese Mauser 45-70 before I use it in my Winchester, just to be on the safe side and find out how stiff the recoil is, before experencing the cresant butt plate of the Winchester.
The jacketed bullets won't do any better then the cast bullets, in the 45-70. I've not fired a jacketed slug through my Siamese Mauser in 25 years and the Winchester has never had a jacketed bullet through it since it left the factory.

LoneEagleI like the Speer 400gr SP over 58.0 gr of H-335. This load is Max for Lever Actions (such as my Guide Gun) in the newest Speer Manual. This load has averaged under 1 MOA out of 2 Guide Guns, and clocks about 1850 from said 18.5" barrel. Sean

NotRicochetI haven't seen WC845, but I'd expect it to be very similar to WC844 and WC846. The Western Cartridge Ball powders in close numerical sequence tend to be very similar.
I have some of Jeff Bartlett's "PSA." It was Chinese-made Ball powder made to be Accurate 2230, but was rejected because it flashed too much. 50 grains of it under a 340 grain wheelweight-cast Lyman #457122HP Gould hollowpoint is a mild load for the 1895 Marlin and 1886 Winchester, giving about 1750 FPS from my 22" Marlin. (It also makes a dazzling flash that'll give you a tan with a few shots and might start forest fires.)
AA2230 is very similar to WC844 and H335. They can all be loaded heavier, but this is a happy hunting load that doesn't make my shoulder turn pretty colors.
