After a 20 year break, I'm loading again for the .25-06. In the past I used IMR4831 with 117 grain bullets and got good results in both accuracy and velocity. I plan on using this rifle for coyotes and rock chucks and want to shoot 75 grain bullets out of it.

What I want (I think) is a slow burning powder, that will also meter well. I've tried H4831sc and it's ok, but I was hoping for smaller sized powder, like H414 or W760. What size is Vihtavuor1 N160, N560 and N165? Does anyone know of a fine grained powder with a burn rate like 4831? Thanks.

Re-15 is my favorite 75gr fuel in both the 25-284 and 25-06....................

I just bought some Magpro which is supposed to be great in the 25-06. I just got the rifle so I'm just starting. I think you'll do okay with Reloader 22 also.

Mike, I live pretty close to you, being over in Hanford.

I shoot a 25-06 a lot and while there are easier powders to meter, you will go a long ways to beat IMR 4831 in that caliber.

Actually, I use IMR 7828 for 115 through 120 grain bullets, but for 75 to 100 grain bullets, I have had the best luck with IMR 4831.

All the Vihtavuorri powders are pretty small grained and meter well, and they burn quite clean.
I use a lot of them in everything from a .223 to a 22-250 to a couple of silhouette pistols. I have to admit I just have not tried them in the 25-06.

I tried the 85 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip and they are hell on wheels for shooting ground squirrels, jack rabbits, marmots, etc. but they blow up too readily to be dependable for coyotes.

My dad and I have had better luck using the 75 grain V-Max on coyotes. They work well on small varmints, but tend to get inside a coyote before they come apart.

While IMR 4831 might take a little longer to weigh out, it is worth it in my opinion.

You might try a 100gr. Ballistic Tip ahead of RL-22 at 3300-3350ish fps. Shoots like a BR gun for me and out to 300-maybe 400 yards is damn flat shooting compared to lighter projectiles. Before anyone flames me, go to a 400 yard range and see the lesser drop your not getting from the lighter projectiles.

RL15 in the lighter 25cal bullets is the most common.

I've been waiting almost two months for my RL15 to come in. It's all ready paid for or I would of ordered from elswhere.

I shoot a bazillion 75gr V-Max's outta mainly my 25-284's(as I LOVE the cartridge,so I built 3 of them).

Anyhow,at 3750fps(ala Re-15),the 75's 400yd drop is not much of a factor. Recoil is amazingly light and I can easily spot for myself out of my lightest weight rifles(one is 600 based,the other 700 based and both wear #1 contour tubes in McMillan Mountain rifle stocks,so they aren't heavyweights) and dope my own shots.

With a 250yd zero,the 100's aren't gonna whoop up on them at 400yds,as I shoot a shitload of 100's too,in my 25-06 Ackley and 257Wby's(more capacity to push the 100's along witht and 100's are my favored projectile in the larger .25's).

The 75's require +1.5" height at 100yds to yield a 250yd zero and drop but -11.3" at 400yds(1.5" sight height above bore).

No flies on the 75's,give 'em a whirl,you just might be suprised.........................

IMR 4831 is my favorite in caliber. That is a great powder. My favorite hunting bullet the 90 Grain X-BT over max charge. The 117 Hornady is also a great bullet Very Accurate.

I used some other powder also but this one I keep coming back too

What would you recommend for a slower .25 i.e. 250 Savage on whitetail deer at 100 yds? I have three built up for my son and nephews to hunt here in Texas. Would the 75 grain X be nimble enough at these ranges. I wouldn't load it real hot for the little un's.

I shoot the 75X in my 25-284's quite a bit,as it's BC mates the V-Max nicely and all my barrels happen to steer them to the same POI.

That projectile does an amazing job of busting bone and digging deep. For the tasks you have in mind,that bullet would be my first thought.

Re-15 will allow you a velocity window of 2800-ish fps to 3200-ish or better,in the .250. They expand nicely at all velocities(I've stretched them a long ways) and I have the utmost confidence in them.

Food for thought and that is what my kids shoot in 25cal. projectiles.................
