What other powders for the 308
Currently using 4064 which from what I have read has been the staple for years. Can I realize anymore accuracy from other powders or will I just be spinning my wheels????

I have good luck with H380 and W748. I am currently using w748. Not the most accurate load I tried ( it ususally groups around 1.25 MOA ) but the load I settled on is slightly compressed load when using 150 grain Noslers. It shows no signs of undue pressure and gives me around 2850 fps. PLenty for deer here in central NC.

I don't own, or know anything about, your rifle, so I can't comment on the accuracy potential.

But, some other powders that may be considered standard for the .308 WCF are:

46gr. of RL-15 under a Nosler balistic tip makes me happy.

WC 846 (in cannister grade sold as BL-C2 and WW 748) was designed for the 7.62 Nato (commercially known as .308 Winchester). Lots will vary between distributor/brands of this powder, so use caution approaching maximum loads, but this powder usually works well with the .308. If I weren't using it, I'd probably choose either of the 4895's.

Depends on bullet weight.

VV N-550 works wonderfully in the 308 Win.

W748, RL15, 4895, H335, H380, and my favorite, right now anyway, IMR-3031 under a 150 grain ballistic tip for a chronographed 2820 fps out of 22" barrel.

My .308 blr wasn't impressed with any of the popular powders. (Thought I had a non-shooting gun) Then I noticed noslers accuracy load with 150 grainers and RL12. Stopped by the local gunshop and they had some of the small 1/2 lb bottles. Picked some up and WOW--with hornady 150 spire point flat bases I got a 1.2" 5 shot group--not bad with a 1-3 scope on top!! I picked up some more RE12 and it will be my "go to" load. You gotta love it when a $.12 cent bullet outshoots the fancy plastic tips.

I'm using H335 with CCI magnum primers in my BLR. I'm getting one inch, not bad for a short barrel lever action.

H335 and IMR 4895 . With the H335 I can safely get over 2800 fps with 150 gr. pills from 18.5 " tube. SST's under 1" inch at 100 yds.

I FOUND a load that may not be the most accurate load for each specific rifle but in my "accurate .308 rifles" it shoots "well enough" through all of them, a Savage 10FP, a Savage 110, Remmy 788, S.A. M1A M21T, FN SPR.
46gr BLC2, CCI mag primer, 175gr Matchking, once fired Fed match brass.
All rifles print the same load well under 1" and the 10FP is under 1/2" and the FN SPR is just plain scary, with caliber and a half holes being the norm.(if I lay off the caffine and get some sleep)

In the days before the mouse guns, a lot of local shooters were starting to call AA-2520 by the moniker "Camp Perry Powder", because so many were using it there.

You're finding R12?!?!? Man, it's about impossible to get around here, since Alliant discontinued it. I glom onto every can I find.

My 308's like AA4064 and H4895 so much, I don't know if I want to risk using any of the R12 (which my 223 dotes on) in it, but, it sounds like you found a winner for yours [Smile]

My personal favorite is Varget. I've also had good luck with IMR-3031 and 4895.

R-West--Yup they had a few bottles there. it's one advantage to central wisconsin. NOw--if our dairy farmers could only turn milk into RL 12 they might get a fair price for their product!!

Sealdoggy;I wouldn't count on those 168 Matchkings to much. I once had one go through a target at 100 yds. flat sideways. That was when I quit using them. derF
