"S" die, button ID up or down?
There are two ways to put that button in there, what do you do?

Are you talking about a Redding Type S die, and are you enquiring which way the bushings (as opposed to "buttons") go in??

If yes, Redding states they usually try to position the bushing positioned with lettering down first. See how that works in terms of generated runout. If no good, try turning the bushing with the lettering facing up. It works either way, but there may be minute differences...

Started with bushings in the Wilson BR dies, and the lettering was generally 1/2 a thousan smaller then the smooth side... or tighter, very slightly... either way works.

When the case neck is being pushed up through the bushing, the top side of the bushing has to press against some kind of stop in the die. Therefore, I figure the top of the bushing should be the smooth side. The stamped letters might create some kind of unevenness or irregularity that could cant the bushing.
