The manuals state that the maximum length for this round is 3.250 inches. When loading a 150 mm bullet it comes up way short or else it doesn't stay in the case very well.

Question is, are there some very long bullets made for this cartridge, and also, I suppose accuracy suffers when using the shorter lighter bullets.

Remember that the military 150's were very long for their weight.

I tend to hold to the rule of thumb that states keep a caliber's length in the case. Not always possible but I try. For what its worth. I shoot the Rem 185's and like some of my friends, I find they are more accurate than their very modest price suggests they should be.

That 6 inch long bullet (150 mm) is a whopper! Maybe you meant 150 grain.

The overall length of a loaded cartridge is dictated by the length of the magazine, and sometimes (depending on the shape of the bullet) to a shorter length in order for the chambered bullet not to engage the lands of the barrel.

Except for some very picky automatics, there is usually no problem in loading a cartridge to less than a particular overall length (which usually happens when a bullet is light-for-caliber as with a 150 grain .323" bullet).

8X57 is a very underated, and underloaded cartridge. Just try some of the surplus Turkish ammo if you want an idea of the 8s potential. It is every bit the equal of, if not superior to the .308 Winchester.
