Greg K45ACP 200 gr. Speer GDHP
Can I get to 1000fps out of a 5" 1911 and 4" S&W?
If so,what powders will do it?

enfieldsparesI think that you might struggle with the 4" barrel S & W as it is both one inch less than the Colt and has that cylinder to barrel gap. When handguns were legal here in the UK we used to use Hercules Blue Dot if we wanted high velocity loads in .45 ACP. Alliant makes that powder now. Hope it helps.

Strange thing is my S&W is 10-20fps faster than my 1911 with the same loads. I have some Blue Dot, so I'll give it a try.

Greg K10.0 gr Blue Dot only got me to 800 fps. I don't think this is gonna happen.

Smokin JoeAlliant's guide says 10.5 of Blue Dot will go 1010 out of a 5"

I never had good luck with blue dot either.
A lot lower velocities then book, erratic velocities and pressures.
I much prefer Herco, unique, red dot for pistol loads.
I am using Herco for my .45ACP cast and Unique for my jacketed loads.

Smokin JoeHalf the max loads in the Speer #15 manual go over 1000' from a 5" barrel

Alliant data online says 1010 fps for 10.5 gr Blue Dot for a 5" barrel. I'm getting 800 fps from a 4" S&W 625 with 10.0 gr. Another 0.5 gr. won't pick up 200 fps.
