andym79Light loads for .30-06
I am thinking of a streamline arsenal (minimal rifles) by working up various loads for different projectiles from 110gr to 220gr depending on game for a .30-06 cartridge!
Has anybody made up loads with these sort of characteristics:
1) 110gr ~ 1600fps for plinking (Trailboss?)
2) 110gr HP ~2050fps ~1100 ft/lbs for dingoes and foxes!
3) 130gr HP ~2600fps ~2000 ft/lbs for goats/deer!
4) 180gr HP ~2600fps ~2800 ft/lbs for larger game (not sure if it enough for camel and water buffalo?)
I am thinking the first two loads would require fast burning powders, especially the 1st load, would unique be suitable for 1)?
I can't find any data on light loads in the Hornady or lee reloading manual!
Just reading over at Hodgons website that you can use a 60% rule for light loads, with their powder H4895! Seems straight forward enough.
http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H48...%20Rifle%20Loads.pdfFor example, for a 130gr HP projectile max load in a .30-06 cartridge is shown at 53.1gr for a velocity of 3144 fps! So 53.1X0.6 = 31.9grs.
So a .30-06 cartridge with a 130gr HP projectile loaded with 32grs of H4895, should give a velocity of ~ 1900 fps and a muzzle energy of ~ 1050 ft/lbs!
So extrapolating ~44grs should give me my load 3)
Have I missed something?
And for a 110gr sp maximum load is 57grs of H4895, so 57X0.6 = 34.2gr
should give me ~ 2050fps, good for load 2)?
Do you think trailboss or unique could provide me with a safe load nearest to 1)?
Could anyone tell me what sort of loads and what powder they are using to create any loads similar to these!

goldyVelocity maybe a little higher than you want but I just tested a load of ww-760(H-414)55.5 grains and Speer 125 grain varmint bullets.
Should be around 2900 fps but accuracy in my rifle was superb. Might be an answer for your first two requirments and no need to re-zero.

ramrod340Man 4 different loads to work up then have to resight all in the same rifle. I'm to lazy for that. While I might have a plinking load I would get a quality bullet in 165 or 180 for the rest. My 2 cents a 180 from an 06 is not a buffalo load.

DUKI load a 130 grain Speer Spitzer with Vihta N110 as a reduced load for running boar practice. The POI difference compared to the 150 grain Partition is so small that at 60 meters at the running target it is hardly noticable.
I don't remember the exact amount of powder since the data are at home. The velocity was around 720 m/s or 2.200 fps or so.

GrenadierRemington used to offer what they called their "Accelerator" cartridges. They were loaded with a .224 bullet in a plastic discarding sabot. They were offered in 30-30, 308, and 30-06. The 30-06 Accelerator had a muzzle velocity over 4000fps. I shot a few and I was very impressed with them. I remember seeing a couple of companies offering the sabots for reloaders to use. I was tempted to try them out myself in the 300H&H but never got around to it. If you can find some of those plastic sabots then you can use your 30-06 as a flat shooting .22 caliber varmint rifle.

GrenadierThe .224 sabots for reloaders are still available. I found them at E. Arthur Brown Company. They have load data here:

Now you can handload your 30 caliber handgun or rifle to shoot hyper-velocity .224 caliber bullets! Fit the .224 bullets into our Sabots with the Sabot Bullet Seater die. Then load the sabots as you would any .308 caliber bullet. The Bullet seater die is required for consistent seating of bullets into the sabots… accuracy requires consistency! Shoot to 3,500 fps in a 30-30...
4,200 fps in a 30-06. Free Load Data is Included with Every Sabot Order! Sabots flower away from the bullet after exiting the muzzle. Made from injection molded plastic, these sabots won't harm your barrel and bores are easy to clean with regular Hoppes #9 solvent.

andym79Just found some interesting data on light loads for the .30-06 with 170grn RNFP cast bullet!
http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htmThe best groups were achieved using Blue dot and Red dot! I know you don't want to load to light with a slow burning powder, but these are both fast burning pistol powders, correct?
Are Blue dot and Red dot position sensitive? Should they be used with a filler?
Anyway these are the suggested loads Blue dot 9grns 1142fps Red Dot 7grns 1113fps!
I am always uneasy as to loads not published in Manuals! Do these loads present any chance of SEE?
